This is our first year of homeschooling. I haven't quite figured out how we will arrange our summer work. I definitely will not continue with a full load, but would like to keep current on math skills and of course reading - but we'll do that with pleasure reading and library activities. We're finishing up with SOTW 1 and I'm thinking that I'd like to work on SOTW 2 over the summer so that we can be working on Colonial American History by next winter. Our summer break will match fairly closely to that of the public schools. DD will be at swim team practice in the mornings and she'll continue with violin lessons once a week and maybe gymnastics. We usually sign up for 3 to 4 various summer camp programs. Any suggestions on a very light load that will not seem like school, yet will keep us on track?
We do every month but July. We do about 4 - 5 hours a day all the other months. In summer we do more outside hands on nature with our subjects. Like a quick math lesson on the way to the pool and stuff like that.
Normally I take summers off. We still do art and some science. I will have them keep up with skills using online games. Nothing big. However, this year we will have to work up until right before I have my baby. I alreay took time off during my 1st trimester so I want to make up for that.
I have always taken summers off, because of my dh's job. (He worked away from home in the summer, and we went with him when we could.) Since his position changed, and dh will be home with us this summer, I am planning to contine math and reading over the summer. Not every day, but some basic stuff to keep the skills up. Dd9 has a very hard time getting back into school each year, so hopefully this will work well for her. Our neighborhood pool doesn't open until noon, so I figure we can get a couple of things in in the morning and then head to the pool. Of course, there will be things like VBS and ds's summer camp that will interfere some, but I plan to keep going as much as we can.
Well last school year we finished in May, started back to school first week of July. Summer break consisted of playing, swimming, meeting with friends, ect. Not a lot outside because it's just too hot and humid to do anything outside here during the summer. We started back to school in July because it was too hot and humid to do anything else! But we also took quite a bit of time off in Nov. and Dec. this year. We'll be done by the time we move in May but dd will be finishing the last month of school in public school there because she's going back to ps in the fall. I still plan on doing some things over the summer with her academic wise.
We always take off June, July and August and start back the day after Labor Day. This year we will continue with math all summer. I'd say reading too but she is older and reads anyway. It isn't an actual subject anymore. I'm not sure if we will go back to a full schedule in August or September this year. During our summer break we go to the pool at least 3 times per week. Samantha has two summer camps and she will be flying to Nebraska with her best friend to spend a week with her grandparents. We also live close to the beach so we will be going there a lot as well as fishing and camping trips.
With sd who is doing 10th grade school ends when she finishes the courses. Right now it looks like the begining of July (which is not good because she normally goes to see her mom in July). I always assign summer reading which is at least 2 books. We will then start back up in the end of August or begining of Sept. She may decide to start early especially on history which is taking her awhile. For dd who is going to be in kindergarten next year we will be doing activities and project sheets sporadically over the summer. When we start homeschooling her I will probably plan some simple unit studies or learning opportunities as well as continued reading. To me getting them to read is the big thing.
We are going to be traveling so much this summer with Motocross. We finish up Nationals at Loretta Lynn's Ranch in August. So I'm thinking we'll start school right after labor day. We won't do much schooling over the summer besides reading some books and maybe staying refreshed on math facts.
I plan to continue school right through the summer, for now, keeping with our less hours/day routine. We don't really school on a real schedule, so we're free to take a day off to go run errands, or visiting family or whatever and I don't ever feel as though we're falling behind. That might change as the kids get older and into more difficult work, we'll see.
We usually take the summer off with an occasional school day tossed in here and there. I need the time off as much as Ems does.
umnm.... what's a summer schedule? No really, I tend to start my summer with good plans of schedules and fun each day of some sort... we do a little summer school in July sometime, and then play some more, camping and beaches and pools and such. This year we hope to do some sort of hiking at a state park cause I am healthy and strong! So, that and then theres Summer league baseball.. we tend to get a year of PE in during the summer. Swim lessons, sports, galore!
We take them summer off as far as 'structered' school goes. We do lots of hands on activities and projects, fun stuff. A game of Monopoly to learn money skills, making cookies to practise fractions, ect. Of course we do that stuff all year long, but even more so in the summer. We take nature walks and learn about the creatures and plants we find, we do crazy science experiements. On hot afternoons we go hang out at the library and browse the books. We never stop learning, we just take a break from the books.
We usually take May thru August off, but this year we will probably work through the summer, due to, too many days off during the school year. With this adoption, there is dr. visits, fingerprinting and a home visit. We are all done with that now.
DO you race on the west coast at all? My brother's family are into racing motorcross, its awesome! I am the only one in my family who has not been able to ride in a race, waaaaaaaaa! Id have loved it!
This year is the first year that they won't race on the west coast. Texas and California were dropped this year from the list. Stinks too because we were looking forward to Texas!!! We weren't going to hit California either way, it was just too far for us. Although I'd love to go there too. I think I'd rather fly there though!!!
We almost always end up doing math for some time during the summer, not because we want to, but because 120 lessons takes us forever.:lol: My son is in complete rebellion this year for summer camp - typically my kids go to several camps- but not any more apparently....they take up his whole day he said.:roll: My daughter has graduated and hasn't gone to camps for a couple years now either. He will be VERY busy with 4-H because he has practice for archaery, .22 rifle, and trap shotgun the entire summer to get ready for the fair. Plus completing electricity and entemology projects as well. I'm pretty psyched about next year because it is 6th grade and he's turning 11! Yeah! I am determined to have him enrolled in a hoity toity private school by 9th on a full ride scholarship - so let the games begin! hehe We're also FINALLY going to do our Lego Mindstorms NXT robot stuff to start off the "give me a scholarhsip I'm talented" portfolio.
I think it is so cool to get scholarships for private schools... how do you find out if they have one?
Bummer, my nephew is coming to race in Cal for the first time and I am so excited to get to go and camp and watch him race! We have friends in the area that track is in so we will be able to take them on side trips water skiiing and stuff!
Samantha is already counting down the days until summer camp. She and her best friend have been going to this same camp for three years and this year another friend from dance is joining them. Samantha can only go there one more year after this and then she wants to volunteer to work there when her sister is old enough to go. I look forward to it too. I drive them every year and we have alot of fun on the way.
