My kids asked me what the difference is between a republican or a democrat and I wanted to give them an age approriate un-biased view. I seem to unintentionally show one in a better light than the other. so far I have said nothing but that I would make up a unit study if they were interested.
Well, I think the chosen animal symbols says it all but hey what do I know? LOL. I am not good at being unbiased when it comes to that kind of thing either. Have you done a search online? Oh that's just why you posted, so some dolt can just tell you to do a search....geesh. I think I should get offline now. lol.
i did and came up with this site which is good for describing everything except what each party stands for. http://www.northvalley.net/kids/government.shtml I guess I will have to look each up and write their platform out in age appropriate language. I was jsut hoping to get out of doing too much work
We're getting questions on the difference between the two parties, too. Usually after hearing one of us make a comment such as, "There's NO WAY I will vote a Dem into office!!!" And I KNOW we haven't explained it to their satisfaction. For one thing, we don't want them to think that Dems are the spawn of the earth, and that Reps are just "wonderful" people who always do everything right, lol! It's such a complicated subject!!!
Here's one thing-- http://www.nickjr.com/teachers/lesson_plans/kids_primary.jhtml I'm going to search for more... Here are more-- http://www.teachablemoment.org/middle/electiondecisions2.html http://www.pbs.org/elections/kids/educators.html http://pbskids.org/democracy/educators/donkeys.html http://www.nytimes.com/learning/teachers/lessons/20000821monday.html OK, done for now. Hope something at those sites can help you!
We are reading a book called "Power to the People", and in the back section it has places to contact. They are: Democratic National Committee (to write for info about the Democratic Party and what it stands for) 430 South Capitol Street SE Washington, DC 20003 212/863-2000 Republican National Committee (to write for info about the Republican Party and what it stands for) 310 First Street SE Washington, DC 20003 212/863-8500 I think I will have my kids write a letter to each party and then go from there. Those are some great links! I'd really like to try and get my 9 yr old interested in the election process and all that. My dad never did that for me even though he's huge on politics and government.
Depending the ages of your kids, I would recommend Bill O'Reilly's book "Kids are Americans Too." http://www.amazon.com/Kids-Are-Amer...bs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202842938&sr=8-1
