I just cut our available channels in half (yesterday, actually). Dh and I are too into certain shows to willingly let them go at this point. lol.

And I've found the History channel far too useful.

Ok, so these may be excuses, as I'm sure we'd get along just fine without T.V., but we're not ready to give up on it yet.

Truth be told, the TV is rarely on. I DVR most of our shows and we only catch up once or twice a week. But when we didn't have sattelite and only watched tapes/DVDs, we all got super sick of what we had and it was costing us more than our Dish subscription every month to rent stuff.

We had dish, and we switched to cable because it was cheaper and had way more channels. There are soooooo many times I wish we didnt' have TV at all, but then there are other times I am so glad because we get around 10 educational channel. I think someday we will get rid of it, but dh is stuck on 2 shows that he just can't give up.

Not to hijack the thread, but, REALLY?!

The cheapest basic package offered by cable here is $45 a month (about 25 channels). I just lowered us to the middle Dish package for $40 a month (100+ channels). And that includes our DVR (our cable co. has no dvr).

Right now we have Direct TV (because hubby wanted the football package) but we are less than a year from our contract being up, and we are going to cancel - we can use the internet/nexflix to watch shows and movies, and dh said if he wants to watch football, he can go to the local bar or a friends house. With netflix, we can get lots of movies, including ones from discovery and history channels, and that starts at $8 a month - much easier on the budget!

we have cable and enjoy it too much sometimes. You know I have to have my NCIS, Bones, and well you get the picture. Then we also have a subscription to Netflix, which we love. So, if you are going to go do the whole shut the cable down, consider Netflix.

In my family, we always found a good way to cut down on television was to buy DVDs. You can easily watch one or two shows a day and even re-watch. It can even be made as a special treat after dinner or on the weekends. :)

we have cable a ton of channels, HBO, showtime and encore. We dont watch alot of it, but its there if we want to watch. The kids rarely watch at all. They like Dinosaur train on PBS (its new show) to learn about dinosaurs, sesame street and berestein bears. I have some things i like, but mostly its just there. We also subscribe to Netflix. I love to get old 50's movies, and stuff like magic school bus, etc. I also like watching all 6 seasons of leave it to beaver online. lol Ive been a LITB addict since I was 6. lol

Some days I would love to get rid of it. But then others I don't want to. I like my TV in my room. My husband and I watch it together all the time (after we record what we want to watch). We also do family night with a lot of the TV shows (American Idol and things like that)....

The kids watch too much - but that is more MY fault than theirs.

We just have regular TV..no cable or anything, at first I missed it and the boys did too but now they prefer to play instead of watch TV...much better for them. We do movies on the weekends and watch much less TV now.

I used to Dish and it wasn't as cheap yours, Amie, I will have to look again. I have Cable..I pay for phone, internet and cable..no premium channels.. have a bundle...I pay $120 a month. So..that's $40 per thing...phone, internet and cable. I think that is high. I want to look elsewhere. I switched from Dish because at the time Cable seemed cheaper...huh...not sure why I thought that now. lol

I have a tv with cable as I mentioned. We don't put tv on a list of priorities...but what we watch is on cable. I love the history channel and even sci fi for certain things. My son and dh watch ESPN and stuff. My little one will watch Nick Jr. every now and again. So, what we do watch is on cable. I also LOVE my dvr. I have been able to save so many history shows for school that way....not to mention Star Trek that is normally on at 1am. lol. We can live without it of course. I don't even know what sitcoms and shows are on anymore. I am out of date with regular tv. People thought I was crazy for not watching Lost and The Office. I have four kids...how in the world can I sit and watch tv at night? So, now I just DVR a show or movie and watch it to unwind after all have gone to bed. That or I read..I go through spurts.

Wow..did I just ramble or what...time to go!

Another family with no cable. We haven't had for a few years now. We moved here last year and honestly, the cost of living was so high, there is no way we can have it. We missed it for a while, and we were all wishing we could have it. However, last week, we all went on a business trip with my husband, and the kids and I sat in our room and watched tv all day while he was at meetings. It was awesome - but, it made me very grateful to not have cable. We would waste too much time. We have an antenae, and we get PBS, NBC, CBS, and sometimes ABC. LOL! Good luck on whatever you decide. I have noticed that my children are much more creative when we don't have cable....

we love our TV way too much. we have cable but we have been looking for ways to downgrade...... we had the direct but I think DISH would be better if its just $40 (if its in our area too for that price)

can't live with out food network for me.......... history channel for DH and boomerang and CN for the kids. but all of our other shows are on regular channels.

LOL! Yes I didn't think cable was cheaper, but we were paying $45 a month for dish (60 channels) and we looked around and found comcast had a deal for dish customers to entice them to switch to cable. We now have 145 channels (75 are HD) and we are paying $30. It was only that cheap because comcast wanted to "buy" us from dish.

When the Cable companies use to call, I would shut them up quickly by asking, "And why would I want to pay for something that will help divide my family?" They had NO IDEA what to say after that, lol!

No, we don't have cable. There are times when I would gladly get rid of the TV altogether, but would probably have to get rid of Carl, too, and I'd rather not do that, lol! Dana, when we were first married, we had TV in our room. Trouble was, he'd stay up all night watching, and he couldn't enter the room without turning it on. Sure did put a cramp on other uses of the room, and then he'd complain about how we "never had time...." Yes, I enjoyed watching certain shows with him in bed, but for us, it wasn't worth it!

We do not have TV. We do occasionally watch a movie on the computer. When we do, it will be an old classic movie. Very rarely the kids will watch something on JOOST or the other one, HULU, I think it is? But, with them having been raised without TV, it is very rare for them to do so.

We don't have cable. When we first got married we had basic cable for free with our apartment, and I LOVED being able to watch Animal Planet late at night while I was nursing. We bought this house when Joy was 8 months old, and when we had Katie I was forced to watch Mash reruns (which wasn't tooo bad - I like Mash!) or infomercials. I often ended up pulling out old taped Doctor Who episodes and watching them instead. LOL Really, though, Animal Planet is all I miss from having cable. We talked about not getting a digital box last year, and just using the tv for movies, but in the end I couldn't quite give up watching college football and basketball altogether. I did take the little tv out of the kitchen instead of getting 2 boxes, so if the kids are watching a movie in the living room, I have to find a game on the radio or the computer instead. I can live with that. Pretty much all we watch on tv besides my sports (Charles doesn't like sports, so if a game is on, it's because I'm watching it!) is PBS Kids or occasionally Qubo. We definitely don't want a tv in our bedroom! We like our.. umm.. "other uses of the room" too much for that! LOLOL
