Kris told me about teaching textbooks. I wondered if others of you used them and liked them too. What I am looking about is geometry. Any ideas or suggestions as to where to buy them would be appreciated. I would love to buy used if I could. Also any other ideas on geometry would be nice too. Thanks Kris and anyone else who writes, Lorna
We LOVE TT!!!!! It is the first time I have found anything for any subject that my son did not fight/complain about doing!! As far as finding it used check ebay, homeschoolclassifieds.com, vegsource.com etc. Even used they are expensive, but they are worth it.. I will never use another math again!
Dito, dito, dito to what Crazymom wrote. I love TT. Math was a subject that my son struggled in. We began using TT in seventh grade. He now understands math. What joy! This year we are using prealgebra. It is working great. Wish I knew where to buy it used too.
Ebay almost always has some TT for sale but you will not find much of a discount. They have an amazingly high resale value, which is good when you go to sell, but not so much when you go to buy. Might as well buy new. I bought used this year but I only saved like 15-20 dollars. I would have purchased new if they (TT site) had a PayPal option because I had money in that account I wanted to use, but they don't and did not seem open to providing that option.
Rachael started TT with Geometry (and no, I DON'T want to sell, because Faythe and Phillip will need it, lol!). The next year she did Algebra 2, and this year is doing PreCal. We are VERY satisified with it!!! I love the fact that it's OK that I don't understand, plus I feel it helps make them more responsible for their own education. Keep your eye open; you can find it, but you have to be quick! I've seen it around $130-$160 used.
We absolutely ADORE Teaching Textbooks in this house. Have you checked homeschoolclassifieds.com? or vegsource.com? They do hold their resale value incredibly b/c the company is so reasonable with giving new authorization codes AND it's so good. Last year we fought nearly everyday over math. Tears over math were common. My daughter can't WAIT to do math every day, and does it 2nd (her favorite is Easy Grammar right now, even begged to do two worksheets today b/c of it! LOL ). Anyway, I don't plan on using another Math program EVER if I can avoid it!
Yes, I would suggest them also, TT rocks. It makes math virtually pain free in my house also. My son will never look at math without some grimace, he is set against any enjoyment in that subject. But he is doing well and the review that is built into each lesson is GREAT. It is true, it is hard to find them used for a really cheap price, so if you have the money--I would suggest buying it new (free shipping, at least when I bought it). Plus, then you will have the peace of mind of having everything working and no one else's writing, etc. I was burned on buying a used grammar book on e-bay last summer. It was listed "like new". When I looked at it about 50 pages were written in (heavy pencil marks, impossible to erase cleanly). I e-mailed the seller and she claimed she didn't know. HUH?! the family last name was used in one of the sentences and anyone casually flipping throught the book could see the writing. So, I would rather buy new unless the savings were significant.
Wow! Where has TT been all of my homeschool life????? This looks like JUST the kind of math program I've been searching for! I may give it a try next year (which is fine to wait since they don't start until 4th grade anyway) thanks for suggesting this!
btw....anyone switch from Saxon to TT? Do they seem like grade wise they line up pretty evenly? Maybe I'll just have to do the placement test to see at the end of the year but thought I'd ask. You all have just made my day!!!!
Honestly, I think TT starts out slow.. my "5th" grader is doing TT6 and breezing through it.. now even though he always complained about math before, he is good at it and naturally gets it, not sure how much of an impact that has on how easy it seems to him/myself, but definately do the placement tests and if they are close to what TT says they should get right to chose that level go ahead and do it even though they say to go back a year.
I agree. My 3rd grader is doing TT5. We love it and ds actually looks forward to doing math now - and taking the quizzes!
Yeah I wish we would have gone TT7 sometimes, but really I didn't want him to be too far ahead level wise because then come highschool I'm going to be scrambling to find more maths for him, as it is now I will have to find 1 years worth, and we don't live where there is a community college for him to use as an option.
Huh. Phillip is doing Saxon 54 this year, and is fussing BIG TIME with it. I really don't want to switch him, as I really don't want to invest in another math program. And if I were to buy it for him this year, it'd be JUST him, kwim? I wonder, if I WERE to switch, which to switch to. Does anyone know if there's a placement test?
I noticed that there's no extra workbook option to buy. since mine are both in the same grade, I always need to get the full set + extra workbook set in anything I buy. It says if you need more that you've already used just to call customer service. I wonder if they just give you an extra set of workbooks for free????? Anyone know? Or know how much it costs?
