I think that's simply for viewing the sample lessons and nothing to do with the actual courses.

My thinking is that the only way they could limit installs is by having the program access their site during the installs, maybe during registration. It can't be something on the CD ROM because there can be no change to the CD ROM as it can't be written to. It can't be something installed on the computer because we're talking about new computers.

The most likely thing is that during every install the program accesses the internet and send some marker to the TT site saying it's been installed on a certain computer and asking for permission to install again. This could be attached to your registration information (I'm assuming that you register the software online when you install?).

If you're re-installing on the same computer, it's probably already installed a marker there (in a database called the registry) that gives it permission to reinstall. This makes me think that if your computer crashed and your had to reinstall Windows ( a process that would change the registry and eliminate all entries that weren't essential to Windows), that would count as an install on a new computer.

Either way, if this is how they're doing it, it riles me up. This is basically spyware. They're installing something that's either connecting to the internet without your knowledge or piggybacking information on what you think is simply registration without your knowledge.

And they're still taking away from your right to resell.

Yes, re-installing on a crashed computer counts as a new install. They did say that when I called.

Lisa, check out www.homeschoolclassifieds.com I've also been looking at Vegsource. I wouldn't worry about getting Algebra II. That's what I'm looking for, and it's hard to come by. I do have an e-mail in to someone, but I've not heard back, and I had difficulty sending the e-mail to her in the first place. So I'm not sure she ever got it.

That makes me wonder if you could get around it simply by turing off internet access when installing and using the program?

I'm looking for TT 7 if anyones sees that. I'd probably get Pre-Algebra, too, if I found a good deal on it.

I agree with you ladies about selling it. I wouldn't sell it if I wasn't sure the next person could use it. Unfortunately, there are those out there who would, which makes buying used if-y. I can sort of reason out buying it new, since all 4 of my kids could use it.

Pam, My dd is using the TT Pre-Algebra right now. She's 10, so I'm not pushing her to finish it this year, but I think she'll be done by sometime in the summer. I don't have a younger one to use it on, so I'd be willing to sell it to you when I'm done if we know about the re-installing stuff enough for you to be okay with buying it!

I've also seen TT-7, but if I were you, I'd rather buy it from Deena!

Oh, and the second TT Algebra II was gone, too! Sigh.....

Deena, I'd love to buy it from you! So, your dd did the Pre-Algebra this year? My ds is 11 (6th) and in Saxon 76 right now. Math is NOT his strong subject. We've actually backed up once this year. I was planning to do Saxon 87 with him instead of the Algebra 1/2. When I discovered TT, I thought it might be a better fit for him. He's very smart, but sometimes I think he just doesn't get MY way!

I think I'll print out the placement test and see where he stands. I'd certainly rather get the Pre-Algebra if that's what he's ready for. I can wait until this summer, if I know where it's coming from. :) I'll let you know! Thanks!!

I'd love to have Faythe do TT pre-algebra, but Carl wants me to use the same book I used with Rachael. And really, I understand it enough that I can do it. Algebra, however..... I'll be looking to buy TT Algebra for her, rather than the book I already used.

Yes, my dd is doing the TT Pre Algebra this year. She was working in Saxon 76 last year. When she did the placement test she landed 1 point away from the Pre-Algebra. As I did research on it to see which book to get, the 7th grade or the Pre Algebra, I saw that the Pre Alg. reviews for the first few chapters, so I figured I'd save myself $185 and get it, then go through it at her own pace. We spent time working on multiplication so she could do the problems faster, then worked on another math workbook I found, that gave her more detailed help with a couple of things. Then we skipped over one section she already totally knew---well, I had her review it, but not do the problems, since I could see that she understood it well. So, as I said, we're going at a comfortable pace for her, so we'll see how the rest of this year goes.

Once he takes the placement test, let me know what you want to do!

Well, that's understandable that he'd not want you to spend when it worked with Rachael. But Rachael and Faythe are so different! I don't know really what Phillip is like. But if you WERE to find it for a good price, I wonder if he'd go for it, since Phillip's still coming up to use it as well? At any rate, I think the TT would be a good fit for Faythe! My ds14 is doing well with it--it holds his attention well enough for him to get it, and do well!

    Just some thoughts....

Part of me thinks TT would be a good fit for Faythe, but Faythe isn't the independent learner Rachael is. With Rachael, she knows she has to do the next math lesson each day. All I really do is ask her if she's done her math yet. Sometimes if she's having trouble with a proof, she'll ask me and I'll take a look at it. But Faythe I would really need to sit down with every day. Phillip I think will be more independent, like Rachael.

Yeah, I understand that. Just that, if she could understand, having TT is LIKE sitting down with you, since the guy goes over things for examples and has the step by step answers for every problem. Course, that's not MOM! ;) But maybe with you helping her this coming year, she'll be more ready for it after that.

She's just finishing up 65 this year, so I plan on her doing 75 next before putting her in Pre-Algebra. The bottom line is that she's NOT Rachael, and she doesn't learn like Rachael. Carl can be a bit of a butt-head (looking to make sure he's not looking over my shoulder, lol!) and expects everyone to learn like HIM. HE use to read math books for FUN! (Gosh, I REALLY AM married to a geek, lol!!!) And he sometimes has a hard to understanding that Faythe is wired a bit differently. So I kind of act as a buffer between them!

Hey, I'm married to a geek too! When we moved to WA State from CA, and had a new HMO, we looked over the dr.'s available. I was looking for family people, interested in obstetrics and baby care, cuz my mind was thinking about having babies! We narrowed them down to about 3, and he finalized on which one. He said he picked this guy for two reasons: 1: He was the only one who openly claimed to be a Christian, which my dh appreciated. 2) He was a math major in college, that's the degree he graduated with! I'm thankful my dh is (was?) a geek and loves math---he's helped out a lot!

I think we ended up with some pretty great geeks! I met your geek, I mean dh, I thought he was very nice! :)

What placement tests are yoy talking about? Are they from Teaching Textbooks? I have Math 7 and would like to use it for ds next year but would like a test like that for this product. Havent seen one on their web site though. Was just wondering if that was what you were talking about.

I think you have to click on the level you're interested in. So on the homepage click on Math 7, when it gets there, it should be showing a picture of the book. Under that picture of the book there should be a link to click on that says Placement Test.

Try that and see if it works.
