Does anyone have a good web site or any ideas for teaching kids about the human body. I would like coloring pages and also worksheets but at 1st to 3rd grade level. I will be teaching this with a few kids, I'm not sure how there will be yet but I'm thinking any where from 6 to 10 kids, so I don't want to get over whelm. Thanks, for all your help.
If you want to buy a book, I got one you might want to look into. It's called "My Body" by Teacher CReated Materials, Inc. I'm pretty sure I got it from a homeschool company...Rainbow Resources, maybe? I'm planning on using it with my Kindergartener this year. It has you making a full-size tracing of each child's body, and then you cut, paste, color and follow directions to make the various body parts...heart, bones, brain, etc. They are glued onto the life-size kid body. Reproductive parts are included. Very basic. This is what they are. They will develop further as I get older, and they will allow me to become a mother or father someday. You could easily leave this part out if you want. It gives two Body Patterns, one WITH the reproductive organs, and one without.
We are using the Great Science Adventures Discovering the Human Body & Senses. I also have found the McGraw Hill science books that you can often find at Wal-mart/Sams Club/Target are good for simple worksheets. The books usually run around $5 and cover several topics. So...I will pull out from those to use on whatever we are discussing at the moment. I also have a science experiment book Everybody has a Body it says it's for 3-6 year olds and it's because the experiments are real simple. I still use it for my 7 year old and he doesn't seem to mind. I think someone already stated about the Teacher Created Materials (TCM) Thematic Unit book on The Human Body. I have it and....well....can't say I'd recommend to run out and buy it. It's good but...I have TONS better sources. HTH
The TCM book doesn't give a lot of in-depth information, but you can always get more of that. The thing I really like about it is having that life-size body hanging on the wall with all his "inners" showing. The kids just love that!
Check out Usborne books, they have lots of nice books on the subject. That is what I used when I taught biology my first time around.. And we also did the book Jackie talked about..where studied each body part as we traced it and laid it out on brown paper. The boys loved it. On our second time studying this subject, I ordered Magic School House puts out a DVD on the human body that I just ordered..... Also, find a small skeleton, it was so much more fun *touching and feeling* the bones... The best coloring sheets were the ones that came with the TCM book. Too, Dover puts out a nice body coloring book even though its more in depth... Will have you available a microscope? If so, you can scrape some cheek cells and look at them... Hope that helps..
We used butcher paper and laid it out on the floor and drew life-size skeletons of ourselves. Then we labeled them. We haven't started the insides yet, but that's next. Even the littlest enjoyed drawing a skeleton of herself!
To make a backbone: Use a pipe cleaner, wagon wheel pasta and gummy life savers. String on to the pipe cleaner alternating pasta and gummy saver. It's cool and the kids always love it!
Love the backbone idea! Anyway, I will put my 2 cents in by saying that Teacher Created Materials are great books!
