I think I have mentioned before my kids play on a homeschool basketball team. They really like it but my oldest wants to play pro ball. She is 14 and almost 6'2 and loves the sport. Well each year we have a few schools asking if she can play. (most public) Anyway this week she is in a basketball camp at a local christian church and they have now offered for her to play on the varsity team.. She wants to play on this team and I think it would be good if she wants to play pro..
Ok that was long to the question. Has anyone else homeschooled and had the kids play sports/ or classes at schools? How has this worked for your family and did you have any problems??
    Thanks
    Lisa

Lisa, we almost had dd in the sports at the local christian school but they were going to make us sign her up for a couple of classes to qualify or some sort of thing. Make sure things work out with your schooling etc.
I would go for it though! How awsome!

We haven't since we've only been homeschooling for about 16 months but we had friends at Ft. Campbell, KY. They had always homeschooled and their oldest son played on the high school soccer team (Dept of Defense school district not a typical ps) while they were stationed there. He enjoyed it alot!

As long as you are comfortable with the expectations, etc....I say go for it. Now if it was a public school that required lots of hoops, I probably wouldn't but it doesn't sound like that is the case.

There is a large homeschool group that plays private schools about 30-45 mins from us in Virginia Beach. I know when my kids get older if they are serious about sports, I'll probably have to schlep them down there for a competitive team. They play church league soccer now but it's not really "college prep" if they want to go further. We're on a bit of a sports hiatus....since my oldest is in "early retirement" from competitive gymnastics. I'm enjoying the church league thing for now.

I think (but I will know more tomorrow) we only have to pay to play. But we pay for our local homeschool team and it shouldn't be much more then that. The hard part is she has played on the HS team for 3 years now and they play this team so she will be playing against all her friends. She is ok with this, but does not want to let her HS friends down. We just think she would have a better chance for college ball if she played with the school. Even though I have read some great things about HS going pro too. AGH!! We just need to trust in God and thank you for your input.

Our state requires PS to allow homeschoolers to participate in all extracurricular activities offered. So there are a few HSers in the area who opt to join the PS teams. But there are enough here who don't that we have an amazing HS league that is definitely college prep (read= recruiters at varsity games).

So it's not unheadof for a HSer to play for a school, at least not around here.

You might contact those who run our local league. I'm sure they'd love to give you pointers.

Yes I would contact them and if you have a local HS group. We did this and now we have 4 boys soccer and BB team, a girls BB and Volleyball team. A synchronize swim team.(they are awesome!!) we play local Christian schools and other HS teams. But last year we played for our HS team and a travel team. But truthfully the HS team only practices 2 days a week while schools practice 5 days so we are no match. She did great on the travel team they even had a girl from a CMU who is playing college ball come train my DD.
    HTH and thanks

Oh and if you need help coordinating it I am the HS girls coordinator. I do all the registration, renting buildings, recruiting, looking for teams to play, fund raising, uniform purchasing and the list continues.....

I haven't done this yet, but there are several homeschoolers around here who participate in ps sports and some classes. It seems to work out pretty good for them. The officals and chaparones can't get over the good behavior of the hs kids compared to the ps kids. LOL

I am just getting my foot in the door at our local Boys and Girls club that housed a private Christian school for a while, and i am hoping to be able to get use of thier gym during the days... they have after school programs of course but if I can get the during the day time and yes, I plan to contact the local Home school group, I spoke wiht my co op leader to see what she thought, she said it may apeal to some of the peoples out there....
so I want to find a place to practice, then get a flyer out and then figure cost of uniforms etc,
Would I contact the private school near me and ask abotu joining thier ring of tournaments? How would I do that HippyChick?

Well we contacted the local Christian schools for games but we never played one for tournaments. We only played other HS kids. We have some with in 2-3 hours from us and we met at a local area for the tournaments. (this year it was 20 minutes from our house!!!) This was our 1st year playing in tournments and they play serious... I am glad we did not play earlier years we would of never been ready.
Uniforms shop around or even order online. If you can get the ones that the tops are reversible one dark and one light for home and away games.
Rent here is high or at least has gone up. so each players pays 120.00 a year for practice and games. (tournaments cost extra) We have 9 girls and that barley covers the fees. The boys have at least 75 players and they never break even..
Away games we have to pay to get in but the home games we only charge other teams and friends. (team families do not have to pay) Some have concession stands but where we play we can have one sometime??? (which helps with funds) We also had a fund raiser for uniforms. I just ordered 6 here and they were $500.00 for a basic uniform.
Here is a site that might help..
