Well...ya know they gotta sales pitch it some how. lol Sonlight is a great curriculum but...like all of them...it isn't for everyone. We don't use it but...they use good stuff.
Sonlight has changed. I use Sonlight but only the guide and only used. I am able to get all books from my Library. I have bought 1 full core before I found that my library system could get them all. Sonlight Company must be through actually homeschooling there kids because its now about the MoNEY MONEY Money. I don't like how the Sonlight boards which were great were limited to core purchaser or a for fee. There were several boards started by Sonlighters who were loyal but could not afford the full package (to receive free) and felt like me that they do not really value the user (except to pay a fee for the boards) I wonder if this board was one of themThey want the money. I do like Sonlight for my younger kid. We are doing the 3/4 2004 IG and books from library and a few used books not available from library. I spent $50.00. I think that is a better deal.
I had purchased Sonlight our first year of hoeschooling. We bought it the following year as well. Since that time, though, the cost of buying Sonlight has skyrocketed, and we can no longer afford it. So I just request a catalog and use the library. At some point in time, I would like to use Sonlight more, and then Iwould buy the teacher's guides...but not the other books. The programs that used to cost us around $350 for ALL (the Bible, Language Arts, Math, History, and Science) now runs well over $800....way out of our league now. It makes me so sad, because it really is a fantastic program.
Have you written to them about this? If you love their program and are sad you can't do it because of the cost, you could ask someone there if they have some way to help people since the costs have doubled!!! They seem to be cutting people out of their program that would use it otherwise! That's too bad!
The Oz supplier actually spent a lot of time with me to help me cut costs. I only use the manuals & buy some books. There are also some books I've got on our 'don't want to know' list. Anything I don't want to buy our library supplies. This curriculum is really working for us but I agree the cost is prohibitive.
I just suck it up and spend the money. I am using it for 5 kids--we love it--but I figure that $800 for 5 years is about $160 per kid, per year. But I know not everyone can do it that way--sometimes there's nothing left to suck up! (We've been there too!) And like someone said, it's not for everyone. Still, if you've really loved it and feel 'squeezed' out by the $$ issues--I agree with pp and would write a letter. They need to hear that.
We love sonlight here. Last year I bought the science kit and all the readers/read alouds etc separately rather than a core. BUT that's because I wanted books from 2 different cores all the levels of books from each of them. We are still using that order this year. Next year I will likely order a core program. I only buy the basic core not the core plus etc so for the level I am looking at it is only about $400 and it is being used for 2 kids right now then will get used for the other 2 down the road. OF course if I was paying out of pocket I couldn't do it, but here in Alberta the school board you sign up with gives you an allotment of funds thegov't gives them to purchase your hsing curric, or pay for extra activities etc. This year's funds are less than last year but more than 1/2 because I had to switch boards(the one I was with last year doesn't do hsing anymore), but is so worth it when they do direct billing. I order, the company bills my school board. I love it.
did anyone post the web site address for Sonlight? I think the book we need for our Lyrical Science group thingy is on thier site, have to find it and if I can get it in time to join the hs group local here in tis co op for my tester
