:) I would like to hear more about the Geography that your son wrote you a thank you for buying him.

That makes me interested in it. What does he like/dislike? What grade? How long does it last one year?

He is (in public school age level..."2nd grade") but...he's probably more a 3rd grade level all around with spikes here and there. ;)

So far he doesn't dislike any of Geography Matters. We are learning about Canada right now.

We use the Trail Guide to World Geography and I got the notebooking CD (worth it!!!!) So..you print out the pages for the area in which you are studying or you can print all of them at once, your choice.

The lessons are broken out and the book sample schedule says to do it 3 days a week. We usually do it all five because he likes it so much and that way we don't have to spend as long each day.

Each week has 4 days worth of questions and you get two questions each day. This takes you all the way through high school. There are separate sets of questions based on level. (3 levels)

Then there are things to do for the activities.
    Mapping
Trail Blazing - which is an activity of some type.
    Notebook
    Art
    Illustrated Dictionary

What she does is that she puts the reference pages for the other books in there. So...like one of the lessons was about volcanoes and in The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide (TUG) there are pages with more information and more activities to choose from. She says don't try to do them all. Just pick a few and then move on. :)

I think I spent around $80 for what I have
atlas, trail guide, trail guide notebook cd, TUG but...check their website for prices.

I figured geography for YEARS to come it is well worth it!

She seems to be real current with the information. Gee I didn't know that there were 5 oceans now...yep the International Hydrologic Organization (IHO) declared it so.

There is even an eloop for it. GeographyTrailGuides-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

Now if you are doing states or bible then you'd want to join that one.

Take a peek at the sample
    http://www.geomatters.com/files/samples/WldTrGuide-SampleLesson.pdf

Now...you could do it in one week but...sometimes we do and sometimes we don't. Depends on how much other stuff we do. There are 36 weeks but...I could easily see it lasting more than one year. There is just so much fun stuff to do for each continent.

Anything else you want to know?

See if this helps...let me know if you need more.

If I had to be choosy on what I was buying for a first grader...I'd get the Trail Guide w/CD, The Ultimate Geography & timeline book and an atlas. You'll want a globe if you don't have one. Now the Trail Guide and TUG will get your all grade levels so...those will take you far as they grow. ;) Pick up a 3 ring notebook with the clear cover to decorate a piece of paper for the notebook and slide it in. The book Around the World in 80 days could be checked out from the library if needed and it is at the end of the Trail Guide book so....no hurry.

I am looking at possibly buying the art and cook books that they recommend. I wouldn't get the Uncle Josh's maps since you will get the maps blacklines on the cd that you get with the trail guide (be sure to order that set and not just the book). Tina gave me the Usbourne International cookbook...whatever it's title is and we made Candian pancakes. My son thought that was neat and he's a picky eater so....might try out some other ones on him.

Here is a post that was on the loop. (I did a cut & paste)

    > I'm new to the list. I've been considering TG to World Geography for some time, and am getting ready to take the plunge. I'm trying to figure out what to buy. I'd like to have everything we need. This will be for my ds who is at a 6th/7th grade level.

    Cindy's reply....
    Hi _______,
The Ultimate Geography and Timeline Guide is a great asset to use with the Trail Guides. It is helpful in many ways both to the student and to you. It is not a necessary resource but a solid book for any homeschool library as it can be used every year and for a
variety of subjects, including teaching tips, learning styles, and more.

One other resource I have been recommending and included in the last printing of the Trail Guide to World Geography is Usborne's Encyclopedia of World Geography .
    http://www.geomatters.com/products/details.asp?ID=274&RP=/products/&CID=46

Students will use it often in completing a number of "Trail Blazing" assignments. It also has an awesome section on peoples of the world for the culture you're searching
for. In addition it is an internet linked book - many usborne links that expand upon the subjects.

Your list of resources looks complete to me other than the two books mentioned above.

I hope this is helpful to you!

    Blessings,
Cindy (she is the author of these books)

Yep I sure would recommend the geography. I'm telling you gals...it's really great!!! You could even do it together and just crank it a notch to the high school level for the 8th grader if needed. For the high school level I think you would definately need the TUG!
