I have an aunt and uncle who play and sing gospel music. My aunt is my Mom's sister, one of 10. They grew up WAY back in the hills of KY - not electricity, no indoor plumbing. This aunt and one of her brothers wrote a song about their growing up days. They play it and sing at the family reunions. I has asked my Mom to ask Aunt Oleva to write the words out and send it to me so I could put it in a scrapbook. When we were at her house last year before the reunion, she showed us something she found among my Grandmother's things. It was written lyrics to a sacred song she wrote before she got married, which was 1918. It was cool to see this written in her hand, knowing it is probably 100 years old. My aunt and uncle are putting it to music to sing at next year's reunion. Anyway, I got a card from my aunt yesterday, and inside she included the words to the song she wrote, AND she sent me the original copy of my grandmother's song! I am so overwhelmed! She doesn't have any kids of her own, and the past few years she has gifted me with special things - my great grandmothers' scrapbooks, my grandparents framed married license, my grandmother's bracelet, and now this. I was floored when I opened the card and saw this. It is just so neat to have something tangible, written in my grandmother's own hand, from when she was young. Anyway, I am not sure there is a Christmas present out there that can top this!
What a wonderful piece of family history and what a thoughtful and generous aunt. Do you plan on having it framed? I love gifts that mean something special like that. If you are able to get a video at the family reunion I would love to hear the songs. Maybe you could share it here someday. Have a wonderful Christmas. Beth
That was a wonderful piece of family history to receive! Unfortunately, most of our family history has disappeared over time, but every time a little piece of it surfaces, I am just thrilled! What a wonderful thing for your aunt to do!
Wow, how special is that?! What a great gift, an I agree, not many gifts can come close to that one! Take good care of it---it'll be great for whoever you choose to pass it down to as well!
Oh, how special!!! (I have a copy my my g'g'ma's autograph book, from the late 1800's, early 1900's!)
