Ok I know every child is differnet and does everything at a different speeds, thats the joy of homeschooling right?

Any way I was wondering if you could tell me what grade level Algebra 1 would be if they were in a ps.

I am checking because my 8th grader is doing it almost done ready to go to Algebra 2 and but last night someone told me she should of had it done before she was done with 6th grade..... ???????

I thought that was kind of funny... she said in CA ps the kids are done with Algebra by then. I dunno I talked to my niece who lives in Bellflower CA with a 7th grader and she said is doing pre algebra...

wow Kris thats great! My son went out to school in highschool so I know that alg1 is 9th grade,
then they do Geometry then alg2 then trig or geometry2 they call it in some schools.. and I AM in california, AND, the public schools I could quote for you .... say
    MATHEMATICS
Algebra 1 through Calculus meet the UC and CSU ā€œcā€ requirements

    1. You must earn 20 credits of math to graduate from California High School including passing Algebra 1 or its equivalent.

    2. If your basic math skills need improvement, begin with the Transition to Algebra class. After this class, you can take the High School Math class (to prepare for the exit exam) or if you take the Standards Algebra class, you will have fulfilled your high school requirement. These classes do not meet UC or CSU eligibility requirements.

    3. If you took Transition to Algebra in the eighth grade, and did not receive a B- or better, you will be recommended to start with Transition to Algebra.

    4. You should go as far in math as possible. For University of California & California State University admission, three years are required; four years are recommended, to include Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2. We suggest all students take four years of math regardless of the college they plan to attend.

    a) If your math skills are OK, but you need a little slower pace in a class to learn concepts, take Transition to Algebra and then ALGEBRA 1.

    b) If your math skills are good, and you have good study habits and can keep a fairly rapid pace in math, take Algebra 1.

    c) Having completed ALGEBRA 1, you would progress through the courses in this order:

    GEOMETRY

ALGEBRA 2 or ADVANCED ALGEBRA 2

PRECALCULUS WITH TRIGONOMETRY, HONORS PRECALCULUS WITH TRIGONOMETRY

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT STATISTICS or

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT CALCULUS AB

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT CALCULUS BC

that is from a real live Public school in San Ramon CA.. this would be sorta wealthy area... and

Pre-Algebra is usually done in 7th or 8th grade, and followed by algebra in 8th or 9th grade.

Lots of math programs have "algebra concepts" in their curriculums at all levels. Sixth grade is much earlier than expected for a full blown algebra course.

Also, Algebra I is almost always followed by Geometry, then Algebra II.

Here my older kiddos did algebra in 9th. I think if they are in an accelerated program they start from in middle school.

    WHAT????

Well...FWIW...when I was in HS Algebra 1 wasn't even offered as a course until 9th grade. Then Algebra 2, trig then calculus.

SOME kids did AG1 in 8th grade (they had to go up to the HS to do it), and then they would do Physics after Calculus (counted as a Math AND a Science).

    :)

Here Alg1 is 8th or 9th grade. Followed by geometry and Alg2.

From my experience, Algebra 1 was generally 9th but also offered to the "honors" kids in 8th. I do think it's your more likely to see if offered to a wider population in 8th than when I took it in 8th (many moons ago:))

My DD10 will take it in 8th (maybe mid-way 7th).

I am going with the AOP SOS for 7th I think, then into Alg1 MUS for 8th, cause we will have it in a couple weeks the way dd is going with the MUS Geometry ... then he can just follow through.
I will count it as his highschool credits
I lke how SOS does the 7th grade it is a total review up to Algebraic numbers etc.

We are doing a Consumer Math course in 8th (long story) along with pre-algebra. Algebra 1 in 9th, Geomety in 10th and Algebra 11 in 11th. Not sure what in 12th, depends on ds.
