Does anyone know where I can find a list of definitions for math terms? My son keeps having problems remembering these facts. Like minuend, multiplicand, ordinal, etc...... I have looked but not real hard. You ladies here are so helpful I thought you could save me some work. Thanks!
Well, I'll start with a book I bought for this school year. I either got it from Barnes & noble or from rainbowresource.com not sure which. It's Math Dictionary for kids by Theresa R. Fitzgerald. It says it's for grades 4-9. It has terms & strategies in Algebra, Geometry, Statistics, Fractions, Measurements, as well as basic math (addition, subtraction, whole numbers, etc.) . It has a quick reference guide that explains different concepts, a page of formulas, and pages of tables & charts (factors & multiples of numbers; fraction, decimal & percent equivalents; multiplication chart; prime numbers; squares & square roots). I don't remember how much it cost (I can't even remember for sure where I got it, but it was probably rainbow resource), but it was definitely worth it. Ok, now onto online math dictionaries. I did a search and here are a few I found: http://www.amathsdictionaryforkids.com/ http://www.teachers.ash.org.au/jeather/maths/dictionary.html http://www.mathwords.com/ http://intermath.coe.uga.edu/ http://www.themathlab.com/dictionary/dictiona.htm http://mathworld.wolfram.com/ http://www.coolmath.com/reference/online-math-dictionary.html I hope some of these are helpful. I'm not sure how old your son is, so I tried to add ones for different grade ranges. Hopefully there's at least one in the list is you like.
4KidsMom, Did you get your math questions answered ok? If you need or desire some additional assistance, let me know and I will get ya the "stuff"!! Hope all else is well. Dr. Russ
Hi- I second Brandi's suggestion of A Math's Dictionary site. Cool! DS likes to do the multiplication flashcards. MT3
We have a book.. it's Notebook Math Fact Book by American Education Publishing that has like everything you can think of in it. But in my honest opinion.. I wouldn't worry too much. I always excelled in math.. and I never could remember the terminology. I never went to college, but by the time I graduated highschool I had 2 college credits in math... without knowing the terms very well.
Well, once he saw the definition of 1 they all seem to come back to him. But those web sites were great. I bookmarked them.
