I'm wanting to do a timeline with Vicki's history this year. She is doing All America History Voume 2. I have never done a timeline. I need to be told how to do this. Do I need to make a notebook for it? You can call me dumbie now. lol
You can do a timeline however you wish. If you want to do it in a notebook, to to http://donnayoung.org/history/index.htm and there are forms as well as istructions for making a book (look at links along the top!). I did mine on the wall. Here's pictures: http://www.homeschoolspot.com/showthread.php?t=20174 You'll have to scroll down to find them. I got all pictures from the internet (except for the pictures of the presidents, which I got from the All-American History student workbook). I use rubber cement to glue them on.
I bought one that I like a lot from Sonlight. The only drawback with having a timeline in a prebound book is that you can not expand on some of the time periods. If you make one yourself using a 3-ring binder, you could add pages as needed.
Thanks Jackie. That is what I was talking about. I wasn't sure if you had to have a notebook. That is really what I would like to do.
Or you could use a roll of butcher paper. My dd's did this for a Colonial American timeline. We just unrolled the paper each time we needed it and it didn't take up that much space. We have used notebooks also (we are currently using one know) and my dd's like the binder better than the butcher paper ( they can add more pictures or add a detailed page to a section if they wanted).
I am looking in to how to do a time line as well with MOH V1 so I am interested in the links and answers as well.
We are doing our timeline on a roll of brown craft paper that I cut in half through the middle (to make it shorter top to bottom not side to side), then we roll it out to work on it and roll it back in to store it. Works great!
what about figures? Is there a good free or cheap online place for them, or is it better to buy some premade? I am not even sure what to look for
we make ours from the pattern inside the MOH book, however there are companies that make timeline figures. I don't know what companies or how much though because we enjoy making ours.
DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON BOUGHT TIMELINE FIGURES!!! I did at first, and rarely used them. See all the figures on my timeline? I got them ALL from the internet. If I want a picture of the signing of the Constitution, I type that in as an Image Search. That gives you all kinds of pictures to chose from. Pick one, copy and paste it into a Word document. Then you can reduce it to the size you want and print it. You can do that with people, battles, historical events, just about EVERYTHING. And, as Birbitt says, MOH has basic figures you can use, to adapt them for what you want.
I use this site for clip art..its free: http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/sitemap/sitemap.php I use this site for timeline dates/facts: http://www.historyexplorer.net/ This one is American history..plus state timelines (if you are doing 1 state at a time): http://www.e-referencedesk.com/resources/state-history-timeline/
I bought a pre-made book from a homeschool convention. I don't think my teenage son would like one displayed on his wall. It seems to have plenty of pages to include a lot of info. We went to the back of it to seperate the time periods by decades, because we were studying modern history. If we want to add ancient history I will have to condense those time periods or it won't fit or get another book.
We took our timeline idea from MOH also. But we made ours out of different materials and added our own ideas. Ems draws or prints the pictures to hang on the timeline. What I like about this timeline is it is reusable.
