So in the other thread about dyslexia, someone mentioned having a left handed child and the child wrote mirror image backwards. . . Question #1: Is that common with left handed kids? And did it seem to effect their reading ability? Question #2: Did you use or do something specifically to teach handwriting and/or reading? Just curious. . .both twins are left handed. But they are waaaaaaaaayyyy too young to start schooling yet. ;-)
both dh and ds(9) are lefthanded -- i don't know if dh ever did that, and ds doesn't write (he's beginning to learn braille) .... but, i have a younger cousin (he's 18 now) who is lefthanded and i remember his mother telling me that he did that exact thing, the mirror image writing... i don't know if they ever did anything special to fix it...i think he just grew out of it....
The only thing I can tell you that someone taught me about their left hander was to teach tying shoes with a mirror in front of you and the child, down by your feet.
Interesting. . .thanks for the tip. My husband is ambidextrious. He said he did everything left handed until his kindergarten teacher told him not to so then he stopped and switched to writing with his right hand. His handwriting is horrible but legible. I have never heard him talk about switching mirror images but he's one of those gifted types. . .
I will ask my mom if she had trouble. She is a lefty, but because it was "wrong" in school she was made to learn to wright right handed. My little one is favoring his left hand.. but he is kinda young to be sure yet.
I am a lefty, and never had any mirror image problems (well, not that kind, anway, lol). My dh & ds are both dyslexic, ds very much so, and they are both right handed. I personally don't think it makes any difference at all. It is just one of those individual differences - it is like saying that people with blue eyes more often have hearing problems
I have 2 lefties, and I remember both of them witing their names mirror image at times. Not all the time, but a few times when they were learning. Nothing lasting though. My dd9 is right-handed, but reverses things far more often. When she finished vision therapy in Aug. her optometrist said her reversals were now on an age appropriate level. I really wonder about dyslexia with her though. It's not uncommon for her to write letter/numbers backwards, but read them backwards, too (or try, which causes much frustration). Do you have to have your children tested with an educational psychologist or is there another way? (We have no health insurance.) I've had dd tested twice through 2 different school systems. Both told me her IQ is normal, and they could not help.
My 10yo dd is left-handed. She did the mirror-image writing a lot! Everyone told me that was normal, especially for lefties, so I wasn't concerned about it. She did not have any troubles with learning to read. She just grew out of it by the time she was 8 or so. By that age it was just reversals of some letters, not mirror-image writing. I saved some of the things she wrote in that mirror-image writing. It's very interesting how neat and well-formed the letters were....they were just all backwards!
My toddler is left handed...the only one in the family....but too young to tell. I know some kids I used to babysit for that are left handed and they didn't have problems. So, not sure of a connection or not.
My DD 10 is left handed. She did mirror-image some, but grew out of it. I taught her the only way I know how. I didn't do anything special because she was left handed. She learned handwriting and reading from a right handed mom. She is doing just fine. I think you'll have to wait until they get older and see how things progress.
My mom said she doesn't remember that far back..lol. But she did say it is common, and she has known many kids through the years who did it and also who insisted on starting on the right of the page and writing backwards.
I'm a lefty I suppose....I do verything right handed but write with my left hand and hold my babies with my Laft arm. My parents didnt do anything special for me so I guess thats why I do everything right handed instead of left. I never had a problem reading or writing.
Hmmmm. . . I can't wait to see twin backwards mirror images of their names. . .I wonder if they'll get them mixed up like we do! LOL (That was a meek attempt at a joke in case you're confused. . .we frequently mix up our fraternal girls. . .sad. . .I know.)
