I have sent all the paperwork into my district twice now. . .essentially every time the person in charge gets changed. . .I am told to re send it. Legally, I don't have to but dh feels like complying within reason is really in our best interests.

I've just received a letter threatening me if I don't turn in my IHIPs which I've already turned in!:eek:

On a rather humorous note though, the letter states:

Please be advised that you have four weeks to turn in your IHIPs or you will receive a letter of compliance. . .

A letter of compliance? Really? I am so tempted to write back telling him that I'm not sending anything bc according to his letter one must assume turning in the paper work will result in non-compliance--and I sure don't want that!!!!!

(Thanks girls for letting me vent.)

Ladies, I'm officially on a letter writing campaign. I have already written to HSLDA. . .

I am going to copy the letter they sent (or the relevant portion). . .and send it to the office in charge of his office, the mayor's office (which in NYC, public schools are under the mayor's authority) and any other higher ups I can think of. Then I'm going to send a letter to sympathetic political candidates ( like senators and such) and I may just send one to our darling Senator Hilary Clinton--just to annoy her office staff. ;-)

Finally, I am going to write a letter to the New York Times and the Daily News and of course I'll write on my blog. (I'll link when we're together.)

But yes, the letter is hilarious. Even my 6 yo said, "Mom, don't they mean non-compliance?

What a crock!!! Hey, I'm sending useless information by mail, again, also. We can have a little useless information sending party!!
And maybe your 6yo should give them a grammar lesson!

    Bwwwwwwaaaaaaaa (hear that--it's me screaming!!!)

Our central office of homeschooling (which just to clarify is not one school district like the rest of NY but rather all of NYC--several school districts) started to refuse to sign for things. They wouldn't sign for registered mail. My friend actually went down town and they refused to give her a receipt and so she refused to give it to them. ;-)

I sent mine via e-mail. I have an electronic read receipt for it but it's not the same--I know. I'll talk to HSLDA tomorrow and decide whether or not to resend it. Regardless, I'm still writing all those letters!!!:(

REFUSES TO SIGN!!! And just how legal is that, may I ask? Besides, you'd still have a receipt from the Post Office that says it was SENT, and that's all that matters!

Of course, that's because they've lost so many of them, and they can't do a darn thing about it, because people have the receipt.

It's not. When you do more than is legally required the bureaucrats expect you to do more than is legally required and will start asking for even more. I do the bare minimum of what's required and have ready access to the applicable legislation should any one should bother me about that.

Doing the bare minimum is actually the advice of the provincial homeschool organizations here.

As far as having it sent. . .no. . .I've been told (by HSLDA) the language of the law is based on having 'received'. The receipt proving when I've sent it is essentially useless. . .they need to have received it. It used to be the really nice lady would say, "hey, I'm missing this. . .did you send it?" But now they've centralized everything and it stinks, stinks, stinks!

Hmmm. Then it would seem to me that they couldn't legally refuse to sign for it. But that's neither here nor there.

I certainly respect your opinion and generally agree with you. I realize that I didn't totally make it clear but we are resending on the advice of our lawyers. (I'm not sure we will this time but in the past we have.) While it is not in general the best interest of homeschoolers to be benevolent to their distircts, it is in fact in OUR best interests. ;-) Hope that clarifies things.

It's OK, Sneaky! Sometimes it IS easier just to send something in! My first time reporting, the district didn't get a particular paper. I KNOW I sent it, but they claimed I didn't. At that point, I figured it really didn't matter WHO was right. It was easier for me to deal with it than to fight with them, so I did. And I probably would do the same thing if it were to happen tomorrow. The lady I dealt with, btw, was VERY nice to me about it!

Probably true. . .but what are you going to do? This is not an office with a few people working in it. This building has hundreds of offices with hundreds of people working for and with the board of ed in some capacity. Since no one is signing for it, what would you say? I sent my thing in and no one signed for it? They can just say that joe schmoe who was sitting there is not authorized OR that only jean schmee is allowed to sign fo rit and she was dying of a mysterious illness that day. . .

Don't worry - there are crazy bureaucrats everywhere.

When we first registered I printed the form from the internet, filled it in, sent it off....
They sent me a letter saying that I had not used the correct form, and enclosed the correct one. It was exactly the same, except it was printed on yellow paper!!!!!
Man did I see red looking at the yellow paper, lol.
