A friend of mine had gastric bypass surgery on the 1st. She had some complications and spent an extra couple of days in the hospital afterward. I just found out though that she died last night. :cry: I've been busy and then I've been sick and I couldn't get over to see her, she lives over an hour away. I did get to talk to her once since her surgery, a few times I left messages for her. I just am so sad. I know she's with Jesus. But I just didn't get to see her. I really felt uneasy about that surgery for her. I'm going to miss her.
So sorry for your loss. Growing up, my dad's boss died from complications from gastric bypass. I know it has helped so many people but it is scary at the same time. Praying for you. Rhonda
I'm so sorry! Everyone I know who has had gastric bypass has had complications. Luckily none have passed away, but my cousin has no answers as to why she is now as white as a ghost all the time (she litterally looks like she is covered in powder). I have (from my about to deliver pregnancy weight) 120 pounds to lose after this baby.. I am terrified of gastric bypass, and not sure about lapband (though that would be my 1st choice).. so I have threatened myself that if I don't lose the weight on my own in the 2 years I will have to go the surgery route.
I am so sorry for the loss of your friend. I had my gastric bypass done a year and a half ago. So far my health is great. I was not very healthy before I had the surgery. I was morbidly obese and now am down 100 pounds. Again I am so sorry for your loss.
I am so sorry for your loss. I'm glad that some have success with weight loss surgery, but most of my friends who have had it have ended up with serious complications. Thankfully, though, none have died...yet. That's so sad that your friend passed away. Do they know exactly what went wrong? I used to wish that I could have it done (but found out that anyone with autoimmune disease or even a family history of it shouldn't do so)...but seeing all my friends' problems has made me very wary of it. One of them looks like a walking skeleton...she has lost thirty pounds below her target weight and can't seem to stop losing. She was adorable, even young-looking for her age before the surgery. Now she is in her mid-30's and looks like she's 60, with thin hair, grayish skin and wrinkles everywhere. Again, I'm glad some people have good results from it. It seems like either you do OK, or you really have a rough time afterward. I know how difficult it is to lose weight the old fashioned way, so I understand wanting to have the surgery. I'm just really afraid of it now.
Thanks. I'm having issues falling asleep tonight. I'm not sure exactly what went wrong. I didn't have the heart to ask her husband what exactly it was. I know she was having issues with her incision. The DR had mentioned too that her liver didn't look good while he was in there and they did a biopsy on it at the time of the surgery. All she wanted was to be healthy. She struggled so much and felt it was her last choice. Sloan, I'm glad your surgery was a success.
Get yourself some tylonal PM for tonight if you are still struggling with sleep.. it helps! It is very sad that so many see this this as their only option to lose the weight... I do know how hard it is to lose the weight on your own.. I have done it, but always give in over this or that going on in our life (you know big party or picnic) and once I fall off the horse I just keep going. It's also sad that so many are looking to be healthy, some for the first time in their life, and end up sicker than when they started. I will keep you in my thoughts.

I feel like my DH has been hinting that I should check into that surgery, but I hear stories of these bad things and I get worried about it.
