My husband loves oatmeal but we dont like the way he makes it therefore me and the kids dont really like it. I like the ones in the prepackage but they are a lot of $$ Anyone know how to make good oatmeal? Its such a cheap food for breakfast I really want to like it I dont even know how to do the basic except whats on the package and it sounds boring and with my luck it will just be lumpy. Sam
Well, you could experiment with putting jams in it, syrups, fresh or frozen (thawed or cooked in) fruit... I hope that helps some. WHY is it that the kids only like the $$$$ stuff?
I like my oatmeal with only sugar or honey. Handsome and Ems like theirs with cinnamon and a slice of toast with jam.
We make our oatmeal a little thicker than we'd normally eat it and then we add a bit of milk (it makes it creamy and cools it down for the kids) and a bit of brown sugar...YUM!
We love Walmart's version of maple and brown sugar oatmeal. We buy one box a week. Just boil some water and pour it into your oatmeal. We add butter and a little milk to ours.
My kids only like the old fashioned oats. We add milk, brown sugar and cinnamon. Usually they have a piece of toast with it.
I am not sure if you were looking for a recipe or not ... I love baked oatmeal with mixed fruits and nuts. YUMO!! On the other hand, my husband loves it straight off the stove top made with lots of milk, no water, he adds, essence, nutmeg, cinnamon and brown sugar.
Thanks for all the hints. I think we will try some fruit and nuts in ours. Its too bad we have no pecans this year. I do like the idea of adding milk never thought of that. Love adding nutmeg thanks twosets! My DD loves oatmeal. I just make it like it says on the big can, and add brown sugar and cinnamon or maple syrup. It is also awesome with apple butter or pumpkin butter mixed in after.
Now that sounds yummy! I tried the butterscotch one this morning. I had to double it for me and two kids. It was really good but too sweet with that brown sugar. I added raisens. I like the egg in it because we have eggs to burn here because of our farm, maybe I will try next time with just a bit of honey of course it wouldnt be butterscotch any more Sam
We tried the crock pot oats too...they were nasty! lol. I usually just do the quick cook oats, add a little salt, butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. Yum!
we have ready brek, or i do scottish oats with milk and a bit of sugar, we find it really easy to cook and easy, some people make it with water, rice milk or soya milk
My ds can go through the instant packs like crazy. He could eat 4 packs PLUS each morning. So I get the instant oats that you cook on the stove for a minute/ then let sit for 2 (it's a lot cheaper, maybe $1 for a large tub) then as it's sitting I add 1 pack of the packaged flavored oatmeal for the flavor (per serving) and the kids seem to like that very well and we only go through one of the flavor packages per day that we eat it. I had to do SOMETHING! HAHA!
Autum now thats an idea~! we do like those instant packs and if it needs to be sweeten I can add some honey. sounds good.. sounds good I am so happy I wrote to y'all on it we will have tons of oatmeal ways to eat now
I stick my bowl of water in the micro for about 1 min. then add my quick oats to it. I usually just eat with brown sugar & a litle milk. My MIL like it with Peanut butter.
Just wanted to add that we tried the Grandpa Hubbard's Oatmeal that one is a keeper! Not so sweet. Instead of 1cup non-dairy creamer I used the instant dry milk instead and I did add 1tab of wheat germ. It came out really yummy. I did add all ingridents at once after I boiled the water it still worked out great.
You could check foodTV's website too - Alton Brown did a crockpot oatmeal on one of his shows. He set it up the night before, and it was hot and ready the next day. I've never tried it, we're not huge oatmeal fans here (well, hubby love it...but I buy quick oats and cook them in the a.m. He likes them with a touch of brown sugar and scrambled eggs). Quick Oats are cheap too. I get mine at Aldi for $.89 a HUGE canister of it. Lasts us for about 3 months, if I bake with it (kids like oatmeal cookies, banana oatmeal breakfast bars, and such).
My son likes the instant packs, but since he is the only one its not a big deal. ...... I let him use 2 packs at a time and he can have a bit of toast of fruit if he is still hungry.
