I know this may sound silly but I am used to the microwave popcorn and not used to making homemade popcorn in the popper. In the past I have melted the butter and poured it on the popcorn but it seems to be in one spot no matter how much I mix it. Thus is the reason why I have always liked microwave popcorn but lately the kernels are bad and I want to do things more frugaly and fresh. Anyone have a better way to spread the butter on the popcorn? Also any popcorn recipes? thanks Sam
I have a small water spritzer (like the kind used for doing hair) that I use only for butter or oil. I melt the butter and put it in the spritzer then I lay the popcorn out on a sheet pan and spritz it, salt it and then put it in a bowl and eat it. This method also keeps the popcorn from going soggy in the buttered spots.
you can melt it in a small sauce pan or in the microwave, if you let it go a tad bit too long you will get BURNT butter.......... oh this is so gooooood. (in the microwave it takes 5 minutes.. make sure your container can stand that long and won't let it over flow because it bubbles up)........ now you simply spoon or slowly drizzle from the measuring cup with a spout, do a little and salt, stir and do a little more.
I'm a drizzle & stirrer.... I have a reallly really big popcorn bowl. I air pop the corn. Melt the butter slowly onthe stove top while the popcorn is popping. I pour the popcorn into my big bowl and slowly drizzle a few drops, stir, add more, stir...really slowly. MMMMM....so good. If I were hungry right now I'd go make fresh popcorn!
Sometimes, I pour it over. Shake the bowl constantly so the butter doesn't all end up on one spot and not on other spots... Sometimes, I spray on the butter. I have one of those $1.99 'Oil-O-Pump' bottles from Walmart, that I found in the Gadget aisle. When making Butter Popcorn it is important to use real butter. If you use any butter substitute, it will make the popcorn soggy because water is added. Orville Redenbacher brand carries a liquid that doesn't require heating. You can also buy the Movie theater style butter sauce as well if you choose.
Some say the artificial butter in popcorn can be harmful; So, its good you're making your own. Nothing beats homemade.
Most companies stopped adding diacetyl to microwave popcorn once the report came out. I am sure there could be something else though.
Thanks for all the replys I didnt think I was going to get so many answers thanks! I am going to try the spray bottle idea because it sounds easy enough, then I will keep in mind all the others incase that dosent work for me. I heard about that report on the butter report for microwave not sure if its true or not Snopes says its undetermined. The main reason is money right now. Its just a lot cheaper to buy the fresh kernels then to buy the bag plus like I said earlier the bag stuff seems to be really iky lately worse then stale. Thanks everyone Sam
Oh, and regular meat, chicken, etc. seasonings in the bottle, is a fun option to use, instead of salt.
Good, at least to me. When we make popcorn for movie night, we treat it almost as we would Pizza. The kids like caramel or cheese topping, garlic salt or onion salt, etc. It is nice to have a spread. One time, we had a Social night, with friends and they were surprised with the flavors: instead of the traditional butter or salt topping. They loved it!!
I love the spray bottle idea, I am going to have to try that. I second the other types of seasoning. I grew up eating brewers yeast on popcorn, it's an aquired taste, LOL. My hubby's favorite is butter, curry powder and season salt.
Ok Twosets I can see the onion or garlic salt but how do you spread thicker stuff like caramel or cheese topping?
My Gammy spoiled me. So I hardly measure, except maybe making cakes... Melt the butter. Grind some pepper into the butter. Stir. Layer the cheese into the popcorn. Pour the butter mixture on top, and salt. Serves 4
That caramel recipe is almost like mine but I do not place mine in the oven. The corn hardens at room temperature. YUM! I love it!
My kids sure miss out they don't know that popcorn is suppose to be buttered..hehe But they love it just the same. I am to lazy to melt it. We mix cinnamon and sugar ( I actually have an old spice jar the is just for that) and I sprinkle it on for "desert" popcorn. We use olive oil instead of butter sometimes. There are flavored salts too. We have also liked the ones where I sprinkled in the grill mates for steaks and such. There is a recpie that sounds great on the bag of Kraft carmel pieces that has chocolate and carmel. One time I saw a lady on the tv who would put seasonings in the pan, with oil then add the popcorn and the popcorn was supposed to be flavored that way. She used rosemary, garlic, seaweed etc. I haven't tried it but figured the garlic would burn first. you can also google the kettle corn it is suppose to be easy too.
