    Hi ladies (and guys?)

I'm from the Washington DC metro area. I have two sons, but I don't home school -- guess you could say I've been too scared to try. So I admire you all A LOT! My kids are in a small private Christian school as we did decide a long time ago that public school wasn't right for us. My brother and his wife are expecting now, and I think they have homeschooling in mind. They don't live far, so I might just try to help out (IF they want!)

One of the private schools we attended had an arrangement worked out with the local homeschoolers so that their kids could participate in the sports program there. I thought that was great. I was wondering if any of you have run into this elsewhere. Do any of the public schools do this? I haven't heard of any.

Anywho, I am a Bible teacher and teach one of my son's classes. I have between 4-6 kids at any time. I love the small groups. My newest student has been home schooled until just this year. He's sharp as a whip and keeps me on my toes. In fact, all the home schooled kids I have been exposed to have been really on the ball. Makes you wonder about public education, doesn't it?

Keep up the good work.

    Hi,
Thanks for the compliments. We all work hard with our children. I'm about 4 hours away from you, I'm near Ferrum College. I have a friend that homeschooled 3 until this year, and now she is just hs'ing one. She lives in Reston. Pretty near you.

Where I lived last year, the principal at the ps would let some of the homeschoolers come and help out with reading classes for the younger students and with art classes. I think it all depends on where you are here in what they allow you to participate in. I haven't checked with the new county yet to see.

    Have a great day!

In PA homeschoolers are allowed to participate in public school extra-curricular activities.
Good for you wanting to help out your brother and sil. Maybe it'll give you the confidence you need to take the plunge yourself!
Above all, welcome to the site!

The Public Schools around here do that, I believe, without too much problems. a few years ago my ds took a speech class through the local ps. His teacher was awesome!

Our local Christian school, where my kids would be if they weren't homeschooled, workds with homeschoolers well. We take the ITBS test there, also piano lessons, some field trips, minor parts in the school plays, PE, Week of Prayer programs, and other programs when they have others come in and do music or some type of performance, and I used to run an after school program there.

You should try homeschooling, it's GREAT! :D

    :)

I think I would have been more inclined to homeschool had I known people at the time who did. I knew nothing about it then and didn't know how to find out either. I really like some of the arrangements I've seen here recently where 3-4 families homeschool together. I think I could more easily deal with that.

I almost think it is too late now. Now my sons are 14 and 11. The 14 year old will be in high school next year. I feel fully equipped to teach English, Writing, and Journalism. My husband could easily teach History and Civics. Both of us are computer professionals, so we could teach that with our eyes closed. My husband has minors in Art History and Music, so he can handle that. Plus we already have private music lessons for them. Math I would have to brush up on, as even through I've had math through Calculus, I haven't used it in 20 years. Science would be the hard one for us. Basic Earth Science and Biology I could handle. Anything beyond that? no way...

QueenGeek, one of my dd was 15 when I pulled her out! The high school here has an enrollment of over 1500 kids and things were not going good for her. I knew I was going to lose my child if I didn't do something drastic. I wish I had pulled my now 11 yr old dd out last year and didn't. I've seen such an improvement in her overall behavior and attitude. She had an abusive(mentally) teacher last year and several parents did pull their kids out to hs. I have a sis who lives in NY state now that has been hsing her son since 2002. They were stationed in DC and he was attending a private Christian elementary school that she was satisfied with but the school up where they are now is horrendous. She was the reason that I knew I could do it!

Anyway, welcome to the site. There is a wide range of student ages among us-Pre-school-High school so someone can probably handle questions!

    Hello!:D
The ps around here are not big on allowing any homeschooled children on campus. The private school that offers a homeschool group allows this but we can only go on Firdays. We are also allowed to play sports with them as well but the child has to be enrolled in at least one class with them otherwise they can not compete with other schools.

Taking part in sports vary from state to state and often from district to district. So what's true for one place isn't true for another. I THINK there's a Christian school here that allows HS'ers to do sports. I KNOW the local school district does NOT! (Not that I'd want my kids to play with them! Our local district is TROUBLE!!!)

Don't worry about not homeschooling! If you've been lurking for any amount of time here, I'm sure you've learned that we run all kinds. The one thing ALL our parents have in common is a desire for what is BEST for their child. For most of us that's HS'ing, but not for all. We've a few kids here that are both in private and public school, and some that "attend" an on-line charter school. However you chose, you will be welcome!
