Panning for Gold. We can cover geology, earth science, history, science, biology and many things related to this prior to taking an excursion or two. Could even expand to include economics and current events related to precious metals. I just spent 12 dollars buying pans on ebay and they come with vials and tweezers. I have mesh strainers, buckets, and things to use for digging and scooping.
How cool! We don't live where panning is common, but I have heard that people do it (and actually find a tiny bit from time to time). Pennsylvania is more abundant in coal than gold though lol Sounds like a really fun unit... I bet your kids will love it too!
