OK, can one of you lovely ladies please explain why Americans drop the past tense suffix on verbs. eg fit. Past tense should be fitted & it drives me nuts when its left in the present tense.

It's kind of like deer. One deer is a deer, more than one deer are deer (not deers).

To us, fit IS past tense as well as present tense. It sounds funny to say fitted! :D

We have sheets, the bottom sheets for beds that are called fitted sheets though. :)

I was wondering about Math too. Do you learn the same levels that we do in US?
We do Algerbra in Jr/sr high, for starters then Geometry and Algerbra2 which also includes trig and calc. in there someplace?

Fitted in English, is a past participle. It has to go with another verb to make sense. "She was fitted for her gown."

There, now that was your grammar lesson for the day!

Yeah, what she said! I just don't know how to put it into the correct English terms! :D

(I can spell and use words correctly most of the time---but I can't tell you why or use the words, like past participle, that explain it clearly! I'm learning though, along with my ds13 and dd10, as they do Rod & Staff English!)

Thanks ladies. I knew someone on here would know!:)

No we don't follow the same math pattern. I got myself in hot water elsewhere for saying we would drop math after grade 10. It's not a requirement for Uni here & the only place I ever heard of trig being used was to calculate plane fuel! Have no idea how that works. Math divides into strands ie math for dummies like me (who still failed it miserably), practical/business math & math for the really clever ones ~ though that tends to change from state to state.

As for history, it's general social studies through the primary grades, divides into Ancient & Modern for high school. I did both but the emphasis, whether Ancient or Modern, is mostly on European history.

sounds good to me! My ds16 just asked if he could move to Austrailia! He read that about the Trig and math ending after 10th grade ( he is in the 11th grade this year)

math doesn;t necessarily end after grade 10 - most kids do it all the way through, although technically english is the only compulsory subject.

Now my question - what grades are elementary school?

in canada, elementary school is generally grades 1-6

    7-9 = junior high

    10-12 = high school

kindergarten = not required, but is available free (until a few years ago, you had to pay) through various daycare centers .... but this part is different province by province.. some provinces include it under the public school system, some call it "primary", some require it and some don't. :)

also different from province to province is "compulsary school age" ... here is 7-16 ... "free school privileges" applies from 6-20 (meaning, child has the 'right' to attend for free between those ages) ....

Where we are at in SC it is broke down

    K-4(4yr old kindie) - 5th = Elementary

    6-8 = middle school

    9-12 = high school

Where I grew up in NY state we had k-6 in on school and 7-12 was high school. A few years back they built an additional school to be used for middle school.

Btw, when a child turns 17 ( in SC) they are allowed to drop out of school without parental consent.

okay and nwo here in my town they changed it back..
    it is now

    k-6th in grade school/ elementary
the Jr High/Middle school is 7-8
and 9-12 for highschool though there is talk of removing 9th and putting it back in middle school again.
we have not enough schools for the kids we have in our city and they are restructuring things and so we have many jr highs but half of them are continuation highschools and then we have one HUGE highschool that actually took over a jr highschool on the other side of a street so it covers two school campuses! its nutsy!

When I was growing up I went to Christian schools. They didn't have Jr. High/Middle School separated out. We had K kind of it's own self, grades 1-8 were elementary school, and grades 9-12 were highschool or academy.

    Hello! Another Maritimer :D

Here in New Brunswick, kindergarten is mandatory. Kids start kindergarten at 4/5 years old, depending on when their birthday is.

Elementary school is grades 1-5, though the kindergarten classrooms are in the elementary schools.
    Middle school is grades 6-8.
    High school is grades 9-12.
