Ashley just finished reading "Because of Winn Dixie". Now, we are working on some projects related to the book. One of the things that she needs to do is compile a list of books that adults would recommend for her to read. I thought maybe you ladies would have some good ideas for her. So, if you don't mind listing any books that you would recommend to an 11 year old girl, and tell why you are recommending it/them, that would be wonderful! Thanks, Heidi
bookadventure.com Go to bookadventure.com and they have lists of books by grades and then you can take a test and get prizes. My 12 year old daughter loves this.
"The Little Princess" by Frances Hodgson Burnett I read it for the first time I think last year when I read it aloud to my girls. I think it should be required reading for ANY young lady. It is, first of all, a beautifully written story. I think the plot is interesting, and makes you wonder what will happen next. But just as important, it stresses that no matter WHAT your circumstances, you are responsible for yourself and your own actions. It's who you are on the inside that really counts. That's an imortant lesson for young ladies.
My dd 12year is in reading "The Horseshoe Trilogies" By: Lucy Daniels she just loves them and reads them for hours.
I have to admit that I have not read the book....but the movie was wonderful and I have wanted to read it...anyway, what about Sense and Sensibility? I think it gives an accurate depicition of the state of women in an age where they couldn't inherit or earn a living and were totally dependent on marriage. I'm assuming the book follows the same plot as the movie . I'm gonna love having a library in our new town! I think that will be the first book I check out..... I used to love animal stories...especially Jack London (Call of the Wild, White Fang). Black Beauty is interesting, but I read part of it again recently and it felt like a PETA person was born before their time. Might have been my mood.....
Oh, Brooke, my 2nd grade teacher read Black Beauty to me. I read it to my girls I think last year. We ALL loved it!!! I didn't feel that way about PETA. Black Beauty believed in treating the people with respect, too, unlike PETA. I tried to read Jo's Boys when I was younger, and couldn't get into it. As a result, I never read anything by Alcott. I did pick up Little Women once, but never got further than a page or two. I don't know much about Sense and Sensibility, but I DID watch the movie of Emma, and enjoyed it immensly! "Heidi" is another must-read!
Like I said, Jackie.....I think I was in a cynical frame of mind  . You have to remember that I come from an animal care background so I might be a bit bias against some ppl's motives. I should've refrained from comment like that on the book...as a kid it was one of my favorites. I was also thinking that I read O. Henry's Gift of the Magi for the first time about that age. I remember reading Where the Red Fern Grows, Misty (another horse story  ), Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Black Stallion, National Velvet....oooooo....National Velvet was another one of my favorites then. Notice a theme here????? I appreciated good literature like O. Henry but I kept going back to the animal stories.....not that London and Sewell aren't good authors, I guess I just stuck with one genre. Blah, blah, blah...I'm rattling on. I need more coffee before I get on here sometimes .
The "Anne of Green Gables" series of books is great! I'm not very good at putting my thoughts to words, but I just love Anne going from an annoying orphan girl to a well-respected teacher, wife and citizen! Also, for history and interest-sake, the "Little House" books are great!
Some of the books I loved at that age were: Little Women Jo's Boys Little Men (all three by Louisa May Alcott) What Katy Did (I don't remember the author) Black Beauty The Secret Garden Nancy Drew books Cherry Ames books (similar to Nancy Drew, only Cherry is a nurse) I read Anne of Green Gables for the first time as an adult, but would have loved those books when I was your daughter's age. Sense and Sensibility might seem a bit dry to a child, although I enjoyed the book when I read it for the first time ten years ago. I'll have to think some more to remember others... HTH Blessings
Hellen Keller and Anne Frank would be good for that age. Anne Frank might have some material that some parents would feel is inappropriate for that age depending on the maturity of the child.
books Box Car Children are really good. Wizard of Oz is great. Swiss Family Robinson is a treasure. Magic Tree House books are good. They may be a little younger for her. I don't know. My daughter is a young 12 and loves them too.
For its historical value, I would like to recommend "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes." You might want to read a book review to see if this book's content is too mature. It tells about a girl named Sadako and her battle with leukemia after Hiroshima. Sometimes it's good to balance reality with the fairy tale type stories, imho.
I'm also looking for good books for my dd (she's 8). She loves Junie B. books and books with a sense of humor. She is now reading Because of Winn Dixie. I can't wait for her to finish so we can go see the movie. I bought Ida B. for her to read recently. I read it first to make sure it was appropriate for her age. I loved it. Avery hasn't read it yet but I think she'll like it too. You may want to read the reveiws on amazon.com for that one. It may interest her because it's about a hs girl in 4th? grade. Good luck on your adventure. Hey, did you have any neat project that goes along with Winn Dixie that you can share. I'd love to find something for dd to do after reading the book. Thanks!
Missy~ We got lots of good follow-up ideas on the movie website- www.becauseofwinndixiemove.com It's actually an Activity Guide for teachers to download and print out. It took forever on our computer, but it was worth it! HTH, Heidi
Heidi, I tried to go to that website, but I got the "This page cannot be displayed" white page. Can you check it and make sure that's the right address? Thanks!
