"Halloween" or "Harvest" math

This is an activity for all you new folks! Those of you who have been around since at least last Halloween have heard this before, so you can just roll your eyes at me and go on, lol!

Seriously, it's a great activity. We don't do Halloween, but my kids usually get a big bag of candy each from a harvest party of some kind. We put all the candy together, and the next day, we spend sort it all out on the living room rug. They can sort it however they want. Then we divide our groups into smaller groups (ie: candy bars by which kind of candy bars, suckers maybe by flavors, etc. Sometimes we divide a specific type of candy by the size of the candy. For example, we might have Tootsie Rolls. These might be divided into "flavored rolls", "Large" and "Midgets". My oldest is the recorder who keeps an inventory of all the candy and totals them up. Then, the next day, you can graph them all out. They really get into this, and it's practical as far as gathering, totaling and recording data goes.

I do that, too. We also do graphs with skittles, M&M's, and jelly beans.
