Electricity Companies

In Texas here we usually sign a year contract with the electric company with there rates. Like last year we got one for 11.3 cent a kw.
anyway its that time of the year we need to look for it again. but I found that if I sign a contract this year for a year the rates go up, why I don't know I thought it would be better rates if I stayed longer. But, if I go 3 months the rates aren't to bad. like 9 to 10 cent a kw. But, I don't know if I want to change every 3 months or maybe that is better deal. What do you all think?

I think you're lucky to have options! We have one utility company in the city that handles ALL of the utilities (water, sewage, gas, electric) and we are stuck with rates that change every month on the company's whim.

Ok, that being said: The reason the rate is probably higher for a year is because nationally electricity rates are expected to go WAY up in the next two years. They are likely trying to cover for that possibility. I'd say it's kind of rolling the dice. You could get off cheaper for three months then see an even bigger increase after that.

If I were you, I'd call the company and just ask about what you might expect in three months if you go with the shorter contract. They may not be able to tell you, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Kris they need to raise your bill to pay my dh's wages, lol. He does work for a power company just not yours. It seems like the cost of everything keeps going up up up. Make a phone call and find out what would be better for you in the long run. I would love to be self sufficient and live off the grid, maybe someday.

Wow, that is wonderful that you get a choice, and such low rates too!
Here we don't have a choice of provider and we have a tiered rate system. No matter how little power we use, we always go into tier 3, which is .23 per kwh. Tier one is .12 but we only get 360 kWh at that rate. I really wish we had a choice of providers!
If it were me, I would go with the 3 month just because it is so inexpensive.

My word! I am starting to think we are pretty lucky! There are 2 companies around here but you dont' get to choose, it's based off of where you live. They only change their rates every 2ish years and they don't always go up...in fact just recently they came down! We were paying .10 kWh and now we are paying .08 kWh. We can use as much electricity as we need for that rate, there is no tiers or anything like that.
