What does my dd need before College/ University? Those of you who went or have dc's in University what did your dcs need to take pre college testing?
Pre University?
My ds went to Community College so just did the assessment to get into , out of , classes.
Dd wants to go to a University and my sis is talking abou ther son taking SAT pre testing for a second time, and I am wondering wow, do I need to get my head in the game or something?
THanks!
ACT! Thats what I found that USC wants, so now I am looking to how to sign her up...

All universities require ACT or SAT test scores. Most accept both. Both tests can be re-taken as often as your child needs to. I have started mine in their Junior year, but some people start even earlier. My kids have found the Princeton review books good prep.
Some harder to get into schools require 3 SAT subject tests, so it is a good idea for you child to start thinking about which universities they might be interested in. Go to their websites and read up on their requirements. You can also find the typical SAT and ACT scores that students have who are currently at the college.
I took a number of books out the library to help me figure it all out. I suggest you see what your library has available.
I looked up a list of colleges and Us and there are SO MANY out there I have no idea were we should begin, I am on a list for scholarship.com that is even vague and a lot of the links they send go back to the dumb one the state has that is a lottery basically.
She thinks she wants to act, but being as I am her Acting teacher I don't think she will get too far in that one so am trying to point out the different aspects of that kind of job, etc.
I wont tell her outright not to go into acting, but I am telling her to think of a second thing too.. so looking for Universities that go with that kind of thing and probably something in design of some sort. I always figured she would be good with clothes or home interier stuff but she can get any of that at a trade school 'college'.
I want her to go to a real University because she has mentioned that she really wants to. She even talks of goign as far as England to school if she could. lol
She has the gpa to get in pretty much where she wants but we are searching for scholarships and such and they asked me about the SAT scores on some of the things you sign up for to find out scholarship stuff... consaidering we have been the 'no tests' kind of homeschool it leaves her hanging.
My sister is helping me search as well.. and since she is attending a private (homeschool style) school this year I will as her teacher.
Sigh, its a lot of work.. we are also thinking that maybe for the first year she can start out with online courses since she is younger. not a lot younger but being quiet and a female I would rather her do that for a class or two to get her started on credits and continue from there so we are looking into that too!

I wanted Rachael to take the PSAT. It's not required, but encouraged to give an idea of how she might do on the SAT, and to give an idea of what she needs to work on. But the main reason I was considering it was because she's never taken any standardized test, and felt the experience would be good for her. But I drug my feet, and I think it's too late now!
The PSAT is a good one to take since, if your child scores high enough, they can gain an academic scholarship or, at least, some sort of commendation that they can add onto their admissions application. National Merit Scholars and Natl. Merit Commended Students are derived from the PSAT.
After that, the ACT or the SAT will serve to get your child into virtually any university. You'd just need to look into what schools your child wants to attend and see what their qualifications are.
I highly recommend your child take the PSAT at the 10th and 11th grade levels. Even if she doesn't score high enough to get a commendation, she'll be getting a good feel for the SAT.
We've begun administering standardized tests to our kids with this past May so that they'll be accustomed to them come high school. Texas doesn't require it of us, but I want them to be familiar with the process so that they won't have to deal with test anxiety issues on top of the test itself.
I took the PSAT in early high school, but I don't remember it. That was nearly 20 years ago. I took the ACT a couple of times and used that for my college entrance. I liked it, but at the time, I was an oddball because everyone else used the SAT.

Some kids do better on ACT, some on SAT and most colleges accept both, so it is worth taking both.
About how to find resources: I searched on 'college' on our library website. I remember one book was by Cafi Cohen. I also know my kids took out fat books that listed many colleges and had a brief description about them. It is daunting, but eventually my oldest figured out she wanted to be at Biola - and she is now a happy sophmore there. My 2nd is in 11th grade and he is now trying to work out where he wants to go. He just visited his sister and was impressed with the friendliness of the students and the food. Lol!
My oldest eliminated colleges that were in cold places - and she didn't wnat anything very southern (though she did apply to Vanderbilt and Wake and Emory) so that cut down her choices. She eventually applied to 8.
Your daughter needs to think about what she wants in a college. I think collegeboard.com lets you answer questions on your preferences and then comes up with ideas for you

Jackie the web site my sister sent me to said they do the PSAT normal one not with the lang arts and whatever in MARCH only. SO maybe not too late? I am looking into getting her signed up for it if the teacher doesnt.
I really am hoping he will take care of this stuff thats one reason I agreed to let her go out this year lol
