Granola bars expired 5/31. Would you eat them?

Kroger had a huge dollar sale on their own brand of granola bars and nutri-grain type bars earlier this year. I stocked up. My kids ended up tiring of them, and I kind of forgot about the extras on the very top shelf of the pantry.

Today DS1 was scrounging around for a snack and was happy to rediscover the peanut butter/chocolate chip bars. So I had DH get the rest of them down tonight and that's when I noticed they'd expired.

They didn't look or smell off. Would you eat them or toss them?

Yes. I eat expired granola bars all the time. I am a freak. Our grocery store has a discount aisle with expireds, and I will eat one and make sure it is okay before eating the rest. But cereal, granola, etc tends to be okay for longer than the legalistic shelf life. It's milk-based products you tend to want to eye closer.

My vote: try one, or just nibble if you're really nervous, then chow down on the rest if you survive. If it tastes "off", then toss it, but it probably won't.

Definitely. Best before dates are only best guesses and I try not to let them trump my own senses.

Thanks, ladies!

(Oops...clicked submit before I was done!)

I tend to be a bit of a germophobe when it comes to food expiration...stems from having food poisoning a couple of times as a child and not wanting to go there again.

I was having a hard time seeing how a granola bar could spoil so quickly, but thought you home-savvy ladies might know something I didn't!

well the ones you described would be goood as long as they tasted good. I'm sure there are other kinds that might not........my step dad owns a grocery outlet and I've seen his list of "real" expiration dates...... so I wouldn't worry.

These expiration dates are more for freshness. There's a good chance they'd taste stale, but wouldn't pose any health issue.
