Hi! I decided to try and get advice from people involved in home school. My name is Rachel and I live in Utah. My husband has been working in Wisconsin for the past month and half and coming home for the weekends. His work told him, he had the option of bringing us out there with him, while he's on this project. So, we decided as a family that we would like to go out starting in May. However...I do have an 8 yr old daughter in the 2nd grade. I actually thought it would be a nice opportunity to home school her for the last month she has of school. We will be leaving May 3rd & her school would end May 29th. So, I guess I would just like some support and advice for schooling her at home during this time. She currently attends a charter school and uses they use Core Knowledge and Saxon Math.
I did tell an online group of moms I belonged to about the plans and they seem to think I am being "out there" by taking my daughter out of school a month early. But, I think it will be a good time for me to spend helping my daughter learn. She struggles with attention deficit and I feel she will benefit from our time learning together.
Do you plan to return your daughter to school next year? How long will you be in WI with your dh?
I have no doubts that you can homeschool your dd, but if it is only for one month, I probably wouldn't do it. Though honestly, I don't think most public schools do much the last month of school anyway.
If you decide to withdrwaw her, I'd probably just finish the math book, and do some reading and writing. Do fun educational things. Maybe you'll decide you like hs'ing.

Thank you. I have talked to her school and they seem fine with everything. They are willing to reserve her spot in school for next year. I'm actually looking forward to getting some lessons planned for her.
That sounds like fun! I'm sure you'll both enjoy working on the schoolwork together (well, you'll enjoy it most days ). It's wonderful that the school is holding your place for next year. Where in Wisconsin are you going to be? I used to live there and have lots of relatives there. It's a gorgeous state.

We'll be in Wisconsin until July, at least. It is in the Madison area and we'll be staying at some corporate apartments. I have emailed her teacher to see what they'll be covering the last month. And I am going to be buying some books that cover the same curriculum she uses at school. My mom often gave us mini lessons and made everything a learning experience for is growing up. She would have been a great home school teacher. I know a lot of people wouldn't choose to do this for a month. But, I think it will be good for both of us. My daughter often tells me she would like to be home schooled. So, this will be a good time for me to reconnect a little more with her education.
That sounds like a great plan. We lived west of Madison, near Richland Center. It's gorgeous around there!

Maybe you'll both enjoy it so much you'll stick with it. If you know any other hs'ing families, you might see if you can borrow enough materials to finish out the year. There are tons of online resources, too.
