I'm not sure what grade level spelling to buy dd. And I'm at a block- not sure if I'm going to go with Write to Spell and Read, or Spelling Workout- I'm kind of following the spelling workout way of things with her right now and it seems to be working well.
Anyhow, I need an idea of what is in a 1st grade spelling book from beginning to end. I don't know if I should order 2nd grade or not and I'm going to be ordering here soon.

Today for spelling- first time she's spelled these words she did ray, play, clay, delay, replay, relay, stay, may, and gray.

got them all right only read them with me during our phonics lesson.

wrote them. I then wrote them in sentences and had her find the words in each sentence. Tomorrow she'll do a worksheet using the words.

My problem is I'm having a hard time finding challenging words for her. Do I just keep giving her words from the lists I have even though she's breezing through all of them?

I was thinking I'd just start having her work on spelling more sight words, but would that be more 2nd grade then 1st?

Kim, my dd is 6 and I almost the same thing but I dont do "spelling tests" I just have her write the words and now am incorporating them in sentences to write. I dont use a specific curcullium I just have a "Kite" book that I got at a used book sale.

This site shows the Rod & Staff Spelling. It looks like they don't even have 1st grade Spelling. By this she'd be at LEAST 2nd grade. One good thing about starting at this level would be learning and applying the rules. They'll review them though, so that's not too much of a problem. The page that comes up here tells you the price (Quite cheap!), and you can click to see sample pages.......

By the way, I am not related to R&S in any way, and don't get kickbacks or anything! ;) That's just "where I'm at" right now. :) A year or two ago I would probably have told you something different, mainly cuz I hadn't tried R&S yet. There are a lot of great programs that will work well!

okay it sounds like we're kind of doing the same thing then.

I don't necessarily test- but that's what she calls it- since we started using spellingtime.

Thanks for the link! Going to check it out

Hey that's nice! The entire word list in the samples lol.

    Thanks again!

Seems kind of easy for 2nd grade doesn't it? Or is it just me? I mean some of them she wouldn't know yet- like light- or bright, things like that because we haven't covered that in phonics.

My 6 yr old has 12 spelling words each week, done in word families. 9 of the words come from the curric. and I add 3 sight words. Every few weeks their list is all review, so I'll make her a list of 12 sight words instead. That's how it is this week, all sight words. We do a test each Friday, unless she gets them all correct on the pretest Thursday.

Yeah, I thought so too, that's why I mentioned she would be in at LEAST the R&S 2nd level. My dd just turned 10 and she's in the 6th grade level.

Thanks for the insight Becky! Okay maybe I'll just forgo a spelling curriculum for this next year and keep doing what I'm doing.

Basically I've been gearing it towards whatever phonics lesson we are working on.

We still have a few more phonics sounds to cover this year so maybe I'll just gear the spelling towards those sounds and add sight words. most of the sight word we've covered so far she knows because I made sure along the way that we worked on spelling them at the same time so not just memorizing and reading them.

My son is 7 and can spell just about anything. lol. He has a first grade spelling book from ABEKA. I am only using that because it was left over from my dd. However, he has been able to do the same spelling as my dd....a 3rd grade book. My dd is 9 and working on the standard grade level...letters and her don't play well so I thought I would try her grade level. lol. However, my assessment is the even the 3rd grade spelling is too easy. Both my kids are getting 100% every week. So, I am looking for something more challenging also.

I will take a look at Rod & Staff...other than Deena (lol) I have heard great things about it.

 I realized I was sounding like I sold it or something! Sorry about that, I don't mean to! I just like it so much.

The spelling you'll need to look at a higher level. It's strange: With spelling you have to go to a higher level, and with english you have to go to a lower level. But when you find the right level, it helps the child learn in depth what they should know to advance well.

Ok, I looked through Rod and Staff...thanks Deena for the link. After seeing the spelling lists I think my dd is actually a much better speller than I thought. lol....and my son even better. lol.

I will be considering the spelling books for next year. I am not sure what I will do for the other subjects.
