Has anyone used the K or 1st grade McRuffy math program. Or for that matter their Phonics program? Thoughts?

I've used the K math. What would you like to know?

Do you think that it is a well designed program? Likes? Dislikes? Do you have to supplement? Basically anything you may want to tell me =)

My DS really liked it. He looked forward to doing math every day. He would beg to do math if he knew we weren’t doing math that day. There are a lot of hands on manipulative and fun “games.” The thing that I didn’t like about it is that it is spiral and I felt it was taking too long for things to spiral back around. I didn’t feel like he was learning much. But now I wonder if I should have stuck with it because now, he doesn’t want to do math since I switched to something else. HTH. If you want to know anything else, just ask.

We use McRuffy Math (K, 1, 2) here and we all love it. The children love the lessons and I like the heavy use of manipulatives and games. My thoughts about the spiral approach are a bit different than Mom24boys. I don't find that too much time passes before a concept is revisited. However, we often do more than one lesson a day so that may be why concepts come back around a bit more quickly. My issue is that I'd sometimes like the children to have more practice on a particular skill, so I usually supplement with more printable materials I find online. Most of the time, I use the free math pages at About.com or allow the children to have practice time on IXL.com. Overall, I love McRuffy Math and am glad they're adding more grade levels.

Thanks for the information. I have been leaning toward Horizons and had seen people on these forums who have used it but I hadn't gotten to "talk" to anyone who had actually used McRuffy.

I used grade 1 math this year with my daughter and she loves it. The spiral approach works well with her and she looks forward to math everyday! It is a one page worksheet a day (Horizon has more, but I like 'less') and then oral activities and games and mini drills on facts and as others mentioned manipulatives. I think it is well rounded and a great program!

    * Just wanted to add that she is retaining a lot and I'm impressed by how much she has learned!
