    This totally confuses me!

    My daughter's b-day is Oct 14, 2004

According to traditional public school, what grade would she be in this year? 1st or 2nd?

Our cut off date in AK is 9/1 so she would be a 2nd grader, but depends on where you are (CA?) and what their cut off date is.

*Also within states can differ by your local district...

My son is Dec of '05 and he's supposed to be in kindy, so I think your DD would be in 1st most places.

Whichever one you feel is best for her! Is it necessary for you to "declare" her a particular grade? When my kids were that age, they worked in two different grades, depending on the subject. For example, Phillip was doing 1st math, 2nd reading, and history/science with his older sisters.

In GA she would be a 1st grader. I am not required by law to declare a grade when homeschooling so personally I don't.

In IL she would be a 1st grader, but old for her grade. I would call her whatever level of work you are working on.

I think, if the cutoff is 9/1, she'd be a 1st grader. At least in GA.

Ds was born March of 04 and he's in 2nd, but she would have missed the cutoff.

She would be in second grade here. Our cut off is December 31st.

The reason I need it is because we're thinking about using my other daughter's charter school next year. I need to fill out the paperwork pretty soon for her enrollment.

Ok, it looks like we'll call it 2nd next year.

I found this site, too, that lists the up-to-date laws regarding cutoff dates by state:

    Thanks for your imput :)

    YES YES!!

I think I looked at the year quickly as my daughter was born 2005 and first, so assumed 2004 is second- of course not so!! Math is not my strong suit!!

As homeschoolers we have no choice where I live. Ministry of Ed says cut off is Dec 31. You may teach above your grade, but you will always be in your grade. You are not supposed to be more than 20% behind (whatever that means), but I have never heard of them adjusting your child's grade down.

So in our area your DD would be grade 2. :)

If my math is correct, your daughter just turned seven. I think most states would consider her to be a first grader. Identifying her as a second grader could be a disadvantage unless she is academically advanced, and even then the issue of maturity should be considered. For home schoolers here in Oregon, once you declare your student’s grade, there’s no going back (retention) even if it makes educational sense, i.e. lack of academic progress. If the charter assigns books based on grade level, I’d want to look at them before making my decision to make sure they are a fit. Just some thoughts…

TY, Curt. Yes, she just turned 7. She is doing 1st grade math and reading this year and it's just challenging enough. I think I will enroll her as a 2nd grader next school year.

We don't have to declare a grade level. Some idiot pencil-pusher called argued with me about that. I informed her I wasn't required by law to give that information. She told me that "all the others" did. I told her that was THEIR choice, but I chose NOT to! She was VERY irritated with me! Told me that she wouldn't process my forms then! I told her that, by law, I was required to send them in, and I had done so. By law, she had so many days to return my paperwork back to me. If she chose not to do so, SHE would be in violation, not me, and that would be HER problem. She finally gave up. But then, about a week later, a different (much nicer) lady called, saying they hadn't got last year's evaluation for Phillip. Phillip had JUST turned six, it was the first time I reported him, so he didn't need one. She said, "But he's a 2nd grader...." HUH?!?! That was news to me!!! She asked, "But isn't he...." So I asked her if I should go by the level he did math, reading, or hstory/science., that we worked at his level, regardless of the "grade" designation. She accepted that, but they kept that grade on his form. WHATEVER!!!

In my state, she would be a first grader. We now have an August 1st cutoff date.

So with each state or district choosing their own cut off date, it sounds like it doesn't really matter which grade I call her-1st or 2nd. I guess that would make her either 17 (and turning 18 in 4 months) or 18 (and turning 19 in 4 months) when she graduates.
