I have been using the sos programs, but was wondering if anyone knew of a good 7th and 8th grade science and history curriculum? Sometimes SOS can be a little dry in these subjects, and would like something more interesting for the kids next year. Thanks guys
I use Apologia General Science and Mystery of History. My duaghter is in 7th grade and we love both curriculums.
Another vote for Mystery of History!!! We're starting Apologia Science next year, so I can't say about it yet, but I LOVE MOH!!!
We'll be using Apologia for 7th grade. For 8th grade Apologia it's Physical Science I think. We haven't started Apologia yet but I do have it and it looks GREAT! I'll check out Mystery of History. My daughter loves Story of the World but I think it may be too easy for 7th grade.
thank you so much! I am thinking I will use the Apolgia science for sure. I would like to teach both kids from the same book. I have a seventh grader and an eighth grader. My seventh grader (girl) is a harder worker than my eighth grader (boy) lol. Any suggestions on which book to go with? Question with the history, are the books for a full year, or will we go through two? And which one should I start with? I'm getting ready to order and plan for next year. The kids are on different levels in Math and English, but I hope to be able to teach the same science, history and electives to both. Thanks guys.
Deena and Celeste, "Mystery of History" is easily used by multi-ages. If you do it exactly like it suggests in the book, it is a one year curriculum, but easily stretched out to two. We're finishing up Vol. I after two years, and I'm so excited to be DONE (AND to be moving on to Vol. II next fall!!!). After each lesson, she gives three activities, each marked for "younger", "middle" or "older" students. You can decide which would be appropriate. I would often assign my oldest one of the "older" activities to research on her own. It includes mapping, and has you constructing a time-line. It's Biblically based. Our pastor is preaching from Habbakuk right now, and I actually KNOW WHO HE IS, lol! I wouldn't hesitate to use it with a high schooler, though my DSS went through "Streams of Civilization" when he went to a Christian school and I was very impressed with that book for older kids. But it's more of a "text book", KWIM?
This year we are going back to finish up our ancient history. I already have my SOTW and Timelines, etc. stuff, so we're set for this year. But in a year or two, I may look at MOH, since the kids will be older. What does MOH Vol. 2 cover, Jackie?
Oh, Deena!!! I just got a book from the library today called "Hands-On Ancient People Vol. II" by Yvonne Y. Merrill. (And yes, there IS a Vol. I, lol!) Anyway, it has all kinds of hands-on activities for Minoans, Mycenaeans, Trojans, Ancinet Greeks, Eturscans and Romans. I'm not sure what Vol. I has, but it is REALLY neat if your kids are into art-type stuff!!!
