FYI, the Newport Aquarium, right across the Ohio River from Cincinnatti in Kentucky, is having a Homeschool Day coming up. The cost is still a bit much, but it's a $10 savings over the regular admission price (for adults). I'm teaching a unit on the Ocean right now to Phillip and three of his friends, and I'm trying to see if we can afford to go. Here's what I copied from their web site: Home School Days at the Newport Aquarium May 4th and 5th Visit the Newport Aquarium during our 2010 Home School Days. Join hundreds of other home school families as they learn about sharks, penguins, sea turtles and frogs! Enhance your school day with hands on learning and shark size fun! Purchase tickets for just $12 each, a savings of $10 off general admission. Tickets must be purchased in advance of your visit by phone, fax, or mail order. Order deadline is Thursday, April 29, 2010. All tickets will be available at the front gate Home School Days Registration Table on the day of your visit. And here's the link for their web site: http://www.newportaquarium.com/index.cfm It looks like a really cool place!
I saw that and was trying to decide if I was going to take the girls or not. My husband and I went BK (before kids). It was a Saturday and very crowded- to crowded and we felt like we couldn't really see much because we were fighting the crowds. That was awhile ago though!
Thanks for the link. We love Newport Aquarium! It was crowded when we went too (also during the weekend). I think it would be a great place to go on a date with my husband sometime, so to take our time and relax. But, for now with $10.00 off admission, I think we'll take the kids again!
We went several times when we lived in Cincinnati. It's wonderful! Not as good as the Chicago aquarium, but definitely nice. We always went during the week when it wasn't crowded. It has been about 5 years since the last time we went, so I don't know if much has changed.
Unfortunately, Chicago is a bit far from central Ohio for a field trip, lol! I'm expecting it to be crowded for Homeschool Days, but who know? We're scheduled to go on Tuesday.
Personally, I like the Cincinnati zoo better than the aquarium if you've never been there. They have manatees-my personal favorite ;o) We lived there when my son was preschool age and my daughter was born there at Christ Hospital (I also worked in the OR at Christ). After she was born, I quit working and we went to the zoo once a week during the fall. No one was ever there, which was awesome!
Your daughter was born at the Cincinnati Zoo? WOW!!! And I say MY kids are monkeys!!! No, I've never been, but the Columbus Zoo also has manatees. My middle one was hoping to be a Teen Zoo Volunteer this summer, but there were 180 applicants for 70 positions and she didn't get it. Maybe next year!
haha! I call her a monkey all the time. That was not worded well. That's ok. I do that often. I worded an email to a friend this week that sounded like I wanted to go along on their honeymoon. Ummm...no, not really. LOL! In this case, I did say Christ Hospital after there. I knew what I was talking about. haha! That's too bad because that would be an awesome volunteer experience.
We just got home. MAN!!! IT WAS AWESOME!!! The kids had a blast, we got to see a lot of stuff we discussed in class, Phillip got to pet a shark, I loved the jellyfish, and I met a gentleman from France. He's lived here for some time, but his mother was visiting for his daughter's first communion. The mother was from Renne in Brittany, just up from where I stayed when I was in France 30 years ago!!! I went to Renne one day for my day off!!! He knew the town I had stayed at. I HIGHLY reccomend visiting it if you're in the Cincinnatti area!!! The weather was great, and the sharks/rays were totally cool!!! Oh, and parking was only $2, which I thought was reasonable.
If you go, be aware that they have a no stroller policty starting Memerial Day weekend through the summer! I see your little one is three, so it might affect you!
