My neighbor picked up a lost dog in the neighborhood today and asked us to keep it while we tried to locate the owners. We've been watching Craigslist and have not seen any missing dogs that fit his description. My kids want to keep him of course, but we know that we should make an effort to find the owners first. We thought of listing him as found, but he looks to be a full-bred schnauzer, and we are afraid someone will lie just to get the dog. We are thinking that maybe he has been microchipped. How do you get the microchip read, if the pet has one? He's really a sweetheart, and I'd hate for someone to be missing their beloved pet.
we live in the uk, so if a dog is found any vets can check for a microchip, or dog home, even the local police would help. i hope you find the owner really soon, i would be so upset if i lost one of my dogs  hope it works out
I'd be afraid that if it were taken to the pound, they might not read it unless you left the dog with them. I think I'd try the vet first.
I agree, try the vet first. My sister tried to adopt a dog from a local rescue but they denied her because she didn't give her last dog heart worm shots and she came down with heart worm. Well my sis had the dog treated and it was fine but because she hadn't brought the dog in to get that shot in the first place they wouldn't allow her to adopt it. Last she heard it was going to be youthinized (sp) . How horrible, what a screwed up system.
Definitely try a vet first. Our Animal Control is required to take any found pets in. If the owner doesn't claim the animal, they will put it up for adoption. A person can ask to adopt the dog if the owner isn't found but animal control will make sure you vaccinate, alter, and whatnot the dog before you adopt it.
We took him to the vet, and he has not been microchipped. So, for now we are watching lost ads and taking him for walks around the neighborhood to see if anyone recognizes him. We took him to PetCo and bought a few toys and collar. The kids are loving him and have named him Barkley. Dh and I decided to keep him if the owners aren't found. If they are found, we may be taking a trip to the pound for a dog.
It sounds like Mr. Barkley, or is that Mrs. Barkley , has found a great home whether it is permanent or temporary.
I would be in trouble if we found one. My boys want one so bad, but we do not have a fence and already had one get off her lead line and get killed. Don't want to do that again.
You should go to local vets/pet stores and put up a flyer that reads "Found: Dog ~~~ Call and identify" Sometimes it's hard to cross paths on things like this. A few years ago, I lost "my baby" -- Lil' Bit. I'd had her since high school --- I loved that dog. She was my kid. I put up posters everywhere, called the vets daily, went door to door for miles --- nothing. Then one day, I got a phone call from someone telling me she'd seen my poster and then had seen another poster for a 'found' dog & gave me the info off that poster. I called, and the descriptions matched. It turned out it wasn't my dog afterall (still heart-broken)..... but it could've been --- and I would've never seen that sign if that lady hadn't called. It's been 5 yrs... and even though I know in my heart she's gone now (she was old when she went missing)... I can't leave the house w/o looking for her down every street, in every ditch, in every front/back yard I pass. There are nights I still cry about it --- I blame myself for her getting lost.
He does look young. If he is, then perhaps he wasn't wanted; sometimes people don't know what they are getting into when they get a puppy. I've always had dogs, but everytime I get a puppy, I kick myself for having forgotten what a pain are. Those cute little faces hide their diabolical intention to destroy your shoes, eat your books and gnaw on the furniture. Honestly, if it weren't for their ability to look so darn cute right after they've pee'd on your carpet, then Cruella DeVil's Coat Factory would have a steady source of fur. You wouldn't think he could have traveled that far from his owners, but I picked up a dog along the interstate last year that had traveled 20 miles from home in just 24 hours. It was wearing its rabies tag with a veterinary's phone number; if it hadn't had that, we'd have never found the owners. If there are owners who want him, I hope they show up really soon. It would be really tough to have them show up after you are firmly attached.
I listed an ad saying we had found a dog and the owner must provide information to identify. I have no idea how old he is. If we still have him after a couple of weeks, we'll take him to the vet to have him checked over. We'll ask about age then.
