For now, we'll be teaching right through the summer. We're pretty laid back, though. I like being able to take the day off on payday to go run errands, have a treat lunch at McD's playland, etc. If I'm sick for a couple days and school doesn't get done, it's ok. When the baby gets here, I'm sure school will take a backseat for at least a week or so while we all get settled into a new routine. And over the summer, if we get in 3-4 days/week of schooling, I'll be happy to use the other days to hit the beach, playground, etc.

I guess we really don't have a "schedule" so much LOL

We'll be following a year round schedule which is (starting in Sept) 3 months of school then 1 month off. It's great because you get the month of December off for Christmas, April off for Spring, and August off for summer vacation. But it's not long enough for them to forget everything they learned.

I love the idea of doing school all year. There are so many weeks throughout the year when I just want to declare a no school day/week/month...and this would definatly give me the freedom to accomplish that. I got behind when I was pregnant b/c I was in and out of the hospital alot last year, so I really should do it through this year...and if it works, I guess we'll keep it up! Thanks ladies...this is an interesting thread for sure.

Since "school" is our lifestyle while on the road, we will go all year round. I can't imagine suddenly not doing all the educational things just because it happens to be July!

How did I miss answering here?

We school "year-round" and take it slower and easier from mid-October to mid-January (3 months). We school hard and fast through the summer; it's too hot here to do much of anything else anyway. And there is so much family stuff, gift making, travelling, etc etc going on in the late fall that it's just not worth trying to stick to any semblence of a schedule. So we read, we lapbook, and we keep up (pretty close) with math, and then we make Christmas ornaments. :D

We followed the school schedule because of the boys being in public school. They graduate in June and this may cause us to re-think our plans. I can see us going year round. I need to think about that a while.

We don't do all academic subjects in the Summer. We do math every day, all year 'round.

We also travel a lot. I try to make field trips that will coincide with either what we did last year or what we're doing next year. We save all of our literature and take lots of pictures, and in the Winter we scrapbook-report our summer field trips.

This Summer we're kicking it off with a trip to POrtland Zoo, OMSI Science Museum, and historic Portland places with about a hundred other homeschooling families, a week on POrtland with other homeschoolers, I can't wait!

    Mrs. Hannigan,

I live not TOO far from Portland. I'm curious as to the stuff you're doing, sounds fun!

I don't have the full itinerary yet, since we're going with a group. Trip is June 2-5, I'm blogging it!

We're wayyyyy behind. At least my son is, and my 10 yo dd is doing language with him, so we're going to school during the summer. My 12 yo ds is very reluctant to do ANYTHING on his own, so he's going to have the luxury of schooling over the summer.

We'll restrict going out to play or having friends visit until after lunch, at least 12 pm. Then we'll have time for catch-up.

My kids don't read enough, or write enough. We'll focus on that this summer.

I plan on homeschooling year round. That would give us more flexibility for our days. That way if I feel like taking a day off or only work for 30 minutes one day, no biggie. And I also think it would make school and learning more a regular part of our life, rather than something we do 5 hours a day for nine months.

We pretty much follow the general school calendar. The main reason is that our summers are always busy with camping and scouting events.

I'm still trying to decide. We only have to do 30 more days as required by law, but...when we quit depends on when Zach has covered everything he needs to for math for the standardized test I want him to take in June. So I imagine that even though our PS kids get off at the end of May, we'll work a little past that.

I like the idea of most of the summer off. We plan to visit family and do all sorts of fun, educational things. We also plan for a lot of downtime just hanging out with friends.

Most of the boys' friends are in PS, so it just doesn't seem fair to keep them hitting the books when everyone else is off having fun. And I love the idea of a long break for me, too! :D
