In the purview of the school board, your children ARE truant if they're not in school because the law dictates that children be in school. It's not unreasonable for them to expect us to at least inform them of our intent to homeschool ... that way the child is accounted for from an educational standpoint. That's the duty of the gov't to ensure education for children (whether it sucks or not LOL).

I don't know how anyone could be called a truant homeschooler ... it's pretty near an irony in terms. If you're a homeschooler, then you're abiding by the law and EDUCATING the child ... so how can the child be truant. Kinda ridiculous, actually.

In any case, I just wanted to make sure you realized that you are NOT obligated to let anyone in. The only thing that concerns me is the families you mention who do not report AT ALL. I agree there is no need to give details as to what you use and what you plan to cover ... HSLDA has won a victory in this province in that regard. However, for any naysayers, and it appears you are no stranger to the notion, it is pretty important to be able to "prove" that you are authorized by the Minister of Education to have your child at home.

In my heart of hearts, his authorization means nothing ... I know my children are much better educated here than in this province's ridiculous "institutions;" nevertheless, it shuts the mouths of the ignorant and those who accuse, so that letter that comes every year is tucked safely away just in case I ever have to shove it in some nosey person's face ... and for that reason it's worth its weight in gold IMHO.

You wouldn't believe the neighbors we have ... well ... maybe you would.

Anyway ... since I've not followed this board for months now I was unaware that you have your own supply business. PM me if you want, and if you have a catalogue I can give you my address. Otherwise, I can pass along information about your business ... every little bit helps, I'm sure. I have some friends whose little ones are now of school age, and they have begun the hs'ing journey. I'll definitely share your info with them.

    Help!!

    Hello everyone,
I have yet another question... :D ...I am using the lifepac for alpha omega.I noticed on ebay...that they have lifepac gold...Does anyone know if they teach the same as the reg lifepac?I have the order book and dont see the gold anywhere...Oh was also wondering, which by now you can see I do alot of... :D... If i have to have the new up to date lessons or can I buy used lessons from say, last year. They should teach the same things..right?....does everyone here buy the up to date versions of books every year.....Ive spent alot of money and really havent gotten what I need yet....also,Ive printed out alot of worksheets and the lady at the school board said well you have to go by one of the curriculums on this paper...well duhhh.....I already knew that....was trying to tell her I had other work to help him too.Im finding out that they dont like me much up there....My son has a very weak area in spelling and reading....And he is in 7th grade....Well I went and opened my big mouth and told one of the teachers and one of the schoolboard persons that I was worried and thought I may just take him out of school to catch him up....Told them I have a rule....If you can not spell, you can not read,If you can not read you can not learn...Well,Talk about your face turning red....So,In the long run here, bet im going to be facing the devil over that statement.....Everyone says I talk to much... I feel that I have the right to help him....Heck I was teaching him before the teachers ever had a chance to do anything...Besides they are not allowed to let their personal feeling get in the way of their teaching...As long as I go by the lesson plan on the paper I dont see how I can lose.ohhh,Does anyone know where I can find worksheets on sheeps.
Thank for letting me rattle on here.....I would be happy for any help I can get....

I think it was Kathe who brought up diplomas.

Has anyone thought ahead to what your kids will do for a diploma?

Here even McDonald's won't hire you without one. When I was going through our diploma program there was a girl who was working at Burger King. She wanted to be promoted to manager, but she didn't have a diploma so they wouldn't give her the job until she earned one.

You can print up your own diploma to give your child. I'm not there yet, so I don't know that much about it. Talk with HSLDA and they'll tell you about how it's done.

    Lilrosegarden:

LifePac "Gold" is the older editions which is why you don't see them in your order book. They are simply the editions from before they changed the appearance of the covers. I can't speak as to whether the content is *exactly* the same, but I *can* tell you that I used a "Gold" teacher's manual with the LifePacs having new covers, and they matched just fine. That was grade 1 science. I am under the impression the content is the same and that only the appearance changed. I have seen people sell a set of LifePacs with some old covers mixed in with new covers, along with a TM. The set is complete that way so the content must match.

As for your questiion about if we buy up-to-date versions every year, not too many publishers I know of actually reprint that often. For example, I was told by an Abeka rep that they try to revise each edition at least every 5-7 years. If I knew an edition was up for revision, my personal choice would be to wait for the new edition, but that's just me. I'm not a big Abeka user, but I was just using them as an example.
