Hello everyone.. I have a question for Alpha Omega users.
Does anyone know the pros and cons to the 3 types of Alpha Omega choices... LIFEPACS - HORIZONS - THE WEAVER PROGRAM ???

I am considering them for next year. I have heard Lifepacs is most common and Weaver is bible based unit study..don't know much about Horizons but heard it's math is good....
Any help on the DIFFERENCES of each would help... thank you all so much. How is Science and History and Phonics???

I came from the abcteach forum and am new here, so hello everyone! Look forward to visiting and chatting with you all and ones from abcteach also.

We use Horizons Math and spelling. I love both very much. I did look at LifePacs and for some reason I wasn't impressed. But, when I saw Horizons I immediately wanted it. I actually found the spelling first at a local store. I ended up taking a leap of faith and ordering the math book before really getting to flip through it. I loved it too. I really didn't feel the need to supplement at all with Math or spelling. I think it covers everything needed. If you finish early with it then you can move on to the next book or supplement as you wish. I haven't really learned much about Weaver. I'm sure there will be others here that have tried it though.

I've read about others saying that Horizons is too much repetition but I really don't think so. I know that young children forget things so easily and repetition is one way of making sure that it "sinks in". I really liked they way the Spelling lessons are taught. The student has pretests, practice, many different activity pages for practice and then tests and retests if necessary. I was impressed at how well my dd did this year with spelling tests. She normally (like in journals) did not spell very well...still phonetically. They also have other areas available like phonic workbooks but I came across MCP and really liked it so we're sticking with that one.

Good luck with your choices!

I use Horizona Math through 3rd grade, then switch to Saxon. I had looked seriously at LifePac for math for fourth grade. The biggest difference that I could see was that Horizons was circular. One lesson would cover several different math concepts...addition, place value, telling time, etc. So you would be constantly reviewing throughout the year. That's probably where the "repetition" comes in. Life Pacs consisted of several "pacs", each teaching a different concept. One would be on telling time. When you finished it, you were DONE with time and could move on to the next pac. There was no review.

If you find AO's web page, they have an "instant messanger" type thing where you can ask your questions and get answers on-line in real time. They are wonderful that way, and will take the time to explain any and all differences to you.
