Okay! I feel silly for asking, but what exactly are grits? I think I tasted them before but I may be wrong.

Grits are ground up corn. They are popular in the south, especially for breakfast. Personally, I don't care for them as they are "gritty".

Thanks Nellie, I love grits. Growing up in NJ, I never had them until I moved to GA, but I love 'em now.

I can't wait to try these.

Don't feel silly. Grits are made from corn meal and are similar in appearance to creme of wheat. They taste nothing like them however. They are gritty and salty. They are yummy with many things added in. Cheese grits are my favorite.

Here is a picture of some from Waffle House.

They are good, but it's definitely an acquired taste.

I'll add mine - only because I haven't gotten it updated on my blog yet! :D

Jacked-up Grits

2 Cups water
6 tablespoons Quick Grits
Pinch Salt

Micro on high two minutes, stir, micro 2 more minutes. If not thick enough...cook 1 minute at a time until thick.

Once out of the micro stir in"

2 Tbs soft butter
dash salt
1 cup shredded Jalepeno Jack Cheese
2 scallions, thinly sliced

Serve immediately OR if you can stand it - place in a 9X9 pan and sit overnight in the fridge. Heat a pan on HIGH heat and spray with oil. Cut hardened grits into triangles or squares and pan fry until the bottom is crispy...flip...crisp that side too!

Serve with poached egg and hollaindaise sauce! MMMM :D

Can grits be purchased at the market?
I have to try to make them. The great grit debate has me interested. After reading all the posts, I do not think I have ever eaten grits.

You can always first try them in the cereal section where they sell the instant oatmeal. There are boxes of Quaker instant grits.

Grits have actually become quite a posh food in many places...North, South, East, and West. Being a southern gal I've always loved grits. But, you turn them into a dinner side dish with parmesan, basil, etc...WOW!

I've never used them as a side dish. Hm.
