You are not alone, Becky. I am not a good cook either. If you notice, this is my first post in this new section. There is a reason for that! LOL

Becky I am not a very good cook, but I utalize all the special helps...........and some would awe that I hate brownies that are from scratch!
I use canned tomato sauce, canned and frozen vegetables, packaged pasta, I bought french bread from the store today for spaghetti tonight.
I served my kids canned raviolies (mini size) and often boxed mac n' cheese or canned soup or stew for lunch.
But I LOVE to READ recipes.
oh and I only use boxed pancake mix-- that you add water too!

Amy--I'm with you on the brownies. I cook everything from scratch including cheesecake---everything EXCEPT brownies. They are SOOOO good out of a box.

Becky I'm just an okay cook but I HATE to cook. I do it only because we have to eat. I am fascinated by people who bake bread and make everything from scratch. I'd love to be invited to dinner at the homes of many of you!

Same here, Tiffany! My sis about fell over when she found out that I had never made a pie until last fall! I HATE to cook and it is ironic because I ended up one in the Army. Thank goodness they found out I could type and ended up working alot of my 8 years in the office doing the behind the scenes stuff for the mess hall.

I don't mind cooking if it doesn't take half the store to cook one item.. I love to cook new items and easy ones.
Just those ones that take stuff you never use again and cost you a arm and leg to make and the family said it's ok...

I agree Kris. I worked in several restaurants so I try not to think about what goes on behind the scenes.

Is anyone else not a good cook?? I'm feeling very alone as I read these threads! Lol.I am with you Becky. I try, but I admit I tend to fail quite often. And, anything that looks way too complex, I don't even attempt. The microwave is my best friend. :D Ok, I will admit though that I don't try my hardest. I'm not a bad cook, but honestly, I HATE cooking, so I don't put all my effort into it. Once in awhile I'll get a little bug and want to. Otherwise, it's a chore for me.

Oh, and I do not bake worth a lick. I'm a much better cook than a baker, and that's not saying a whole lot. I can't make cookies at all, but that's usually because I end up eating the batter before the oven is heated up. LOL!

My daughter just asked the question "did Grandma teach you how to cook". My mom was a great cook and baker. She was also a person that "would rather do it myself". I also am that kind of person. I have learned everything from a cookbook. I got tired of hearing from my 1st husband - "It isn't like mom's - I ditched him - LOL. Any way, I found if you follow directions EXACTLY how they write them in cookbooks, it's a "no brainer". I can say, I am a baker and a cooker. I love to cook and bake.

Ohio Grandma, I have to agree with you, I learned everything from a cookbook and you are right follow the direction to the T and it will work out. (SOMETIMES) I must miss something sometimes or something happens because it don't always turn out to be what it's suppose to be..

I'm with you Ohio Grandma and Kris, My mom didn't teach me to cook, when I lived with my aunt, she never went to the grocery store and we fended for our selves.
I learned a LOT from cooking shows and reading cookbooks, but I don't really do many cookbook recipes, I can watch something on the food channel and then take those ideas and make it. Though with 6 picky people its hard and we make a lot of the same stuff. My own cookie recipe is:
2 sticks of either butter or margarine or a cup of crisco, what ever is handy.
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 t. baking powder
1 t. salt
vanilla or maple syrup
2 eggs
all flour (about 2 1/2 cups) or 2 cups flour 1 cup oats
and what ever I have: choc. chips, raisins, etc......
mix, bake at 350 until done.
I might add cinnamon, or other stuff what ever falls out of the cabinet.
I burnt almost every thing when I first got married. --------- maybe thats why we've always had cable so that I have the food chanel to watch;)
But like I said most meals I use at leat one convinience food. I hate cheese, but I like boxed augratin potatoes.
Something happened to my son's taste buds when he was on chemo........ and he only likes boxed mashed potatoes.
I'm making homemade pizza crust tonight but we have bottled pizza sauce.

Okay, I'm a total outcast. I hate to cook, clean, put away laundry, and most other domestic drivel. Washing, drying, and putting away dishes and silverware is a total bore. Maybe I'm short on estrogen, lol. I do cook, I do straighten, I do wash clothes, and all the drivel I detest, though. I keep waiting for the maid to show up...

Becky, I would much rather have a maid show up, too. I hate to clean, dust, run sweeper and bathrooms, Ugh!!! But I like a clean house, and I do love to cook, soooo, since the maid hasn't shown up, I guess it's my job. lol

I also can't garden. My neighbor- a young guy, has a stunning flower and vegetable garden that runs the length of his yard. My garden looks like something Morticia Adams might maintain.

Wow you and I actually have a lot in common!!! I keep waiting for the cleaning fairy to show up. I also am horrible at gardening. If I look at it is usually dies. Dh and the girls do the gardening.

I am right with you, Becky and MonkeyMamma! I don't cook.....ever!! My dh doesn't even like a home cooked meal, so I never learned to cook. He does however like a nice tidy house....so I try and keep the house in good order. Though, I hate doing it!! I do love to have it looking nice, so that helps get me through actually doing it. The same for gardening. I like my yard to look nice, but dh is the one who keeps up with that. Any work that has to be done outside....forget it!! LOL

If it doesn't tell me that it needs to eat or that it wants go outside and play it is out of luck with me. My kids take care of their own plants and do pretty good with them. I do like to cook and bake but hate the mess. And I need some help with my organizational skills but I manage alright.

I don't like to cook either, mostly because I'm a little lazy when it comes to that kind of stuff and I'm not very good at cooking anyways. I always burn everything. I try to follow the directions but it still doesn't taste good. I'm no Martha Stewart that's for sure. I think when my kids grow up and they cook for themselves they'll probably say, "at least it's not like mom's" lol.

I am right with you, Becky and MonkeyMamma! I don't cook.....ever!!
How do you do that? How/what do you guys eat?
I'm with ya'll in needing a maid! I tell ya, I don't mind cooking, I don't mind baking, and I enjoy scrapbooking.... But all I ask is that I have a little maid that follows me when I do those things and will put everything away in it's place when I'm done with it! Oh, and that maid also has to do the laundry and the dishes and the dusting, and the organizing of my homeschool stuff, and just let me know where everything is, so I can get it out again! IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK? I guess so, <sigh> cuz I don't have one! :D

Those things are trivial, you're a great mommy and that's what's important.
I don't mind cooking, but I don't do a big meal every night. I like to cook and bake with ds, I let him do as much as he wants and it can easily take up a day, but it's ok with me. Cleaning isn't bad if I don't have to deal with all the clutter, and believe me, right now I have clutter. Same for washing clothes, it isn't a thrill but it isn't a drag either. I do like hanging them to dry though, that's kinda fun.

Deena, that cracks me up! I don't mind cooking or cleaning (most days). I finally decided to just keep all of my scrapbooking bags in the corner of the dining area (unless we have company). It is amazing how much time that saves not having to drag them out each night. And maybe that will make dh see that I really do need a little craft room when we build!
