What do you use for a shower curtain. We currently use a cloth one on the outside and a plastic one on the inside. The inside one is necessary otherwise the cloth one will just fly around and water sprays everywhere...yes it's been tried! What I do not like is that the plastic shower curtain gets nasty, moldy. I have washed them in the washer before but most of the time they end up with rips in the bottom of it. I would rather not use them at all being that the smell HORRIBLE when you first hang them up...talk about toxic! Any ides aside from installing a shower door? :)

Keep the shower curtian closed when not in use, (mostly) so that they dry out. They sell a spray for the mildew. .................. I wish I had this problem, our bath tub/shower has been broken for over a year.... when we discovered that there are major wires runnng under it. Now our master bathroom shower needs attention, the handle is stripped and needs to be replaced tomorrow.

I had trouble with mildew until I started getting the heavy duty shower curtains. It seems to last much better and not so much gunk build up.

The more expensive heavy duty shower curtain liners work for us, too. We still need to throw it in the washer occasionally, but we have been using the same one for 5+ years with no trouble. And we get way more than our fair share of mildew down here in Houston!

I know this sounds horrible, but I paid almost $10 for a plastic one a few months ago BUT I love it. We would go through the cheap ones so fast and they didn't machine wash well. This one is supposedly guaranteed for a year and so far I've only had to wash it down in the shower and it comes clean. We fight constantly with mold and mildew in our bathroom so I know it is a good curtain. Tomorrow the landlord (after 7 yrs) is finally going to listen and have an exhaust fan installed so that should help too.

We have a plastic liner with a cloth curtain on the outside. I will admit... I hate to clean plastic shower curtains!! I usually by the cheap ones ($3) at Wal-mart and throw them away when they begin to get moldy. I do not use the ones from dollar stores, because the holes rip too easily. If you spray the curtain thoroughly with Scrubbing Bubbles, it will not mold as quickly. Mine last 4-5 months.

I'm like Pam. We buy the cheap ones, and throw them away when they get bad! (Which, I might add, is as soon as I remember to buy a new one, lol!)

I spray my shower walls, curtains, and tub with Tilex after my shower. We had mildew all the time until I started doing this.

We have a glass door on our shower so I only use a fabric shower curtain to cover it up. My problem is the build up on the glass. After so many years, even after a cleaning, it has a film that I can't remove. I wish I didn't have the glass. It tends to build up mold and mildew in the hard to reach places and I can't clean it unless I remove the door.
I guess, regardless what we have hanging on our showers, we will have some type of cleaning problems.;)

I use baking soda and vinegar to clean just about all surfaces in my house, including the bathroom. It was the shower curtain I was hoping to find another idea for. We do purchase the more expensive ones, with the metal rings at the top and they are weighted at the bottom. They last about a year, I do not wash them, I spray them with vinegar.

I have glass shower door too. I spray it with shower spray (can't think of the name). This helps with the water spots.
I wipe it down after my shower each time, the rest of the family is not very good about this however.

In the one where we have the tub/shower, we have a cloth one and a plastic liner. If I shower in that one, I always make sure to spread it out afterward to dry and that seems to help. In our bathroom we have a glass door. I always spray it with Tilex afterward and every so often I use Lime Away on the door. And we always run the fan if the shower is on.

I buy the ones that feel like cloth (they are more expensive), and they last a long time. Every so often, I through them into the washing machine with a little bleach. I have had this one for 10 years and it still keeps the water in and it looks like new. When we are done with our shower - we spread it open so it dries.

That sounds like one I had a long time ago. I used it for about 5 or 6 years (until I got married--dh thought the fish were cheesy) and it still looked great.

Jen- Tilex works excellent, but smells strongly of bleach. Open a window if you can.

Becky, I was going to say the same thing!! I also use a floor fan to push the smell out. One of my son's triggers with his asthma is bleach and I have to be really careful.

I can't clean out the showers with cleaners like that, cuz it triggers breathing problems with me too---AND major headaches! Ours would be much cleaner if I COULD clean it with that stuff. I need to find a more natural type product that I could use that wouldn't have such a strong smell! Is there such a thing?

The tilex doesn't bother me, but the spray Lime Away is awful! Now I use the gel kind and use a brush and it is not so bad.

I have a cloth curtin and a plastic liner. I buy the cheap ones and throw them away when they get bad. I even a got some for $1.00 when they were on clearance. Woohoo! lol. If you don't want to buy a new one everytime you can put your liner in your tub and soak it in bleach for a bit. That works great. Also...it is good to put bleach down your drain every now and then anyway. I personally, don't do this...I have done it...but laziness always keeps me just buying a new one.
