your ds sounds like my youngest! He loves to do it that way becasue he is being specific and at the same time drawing the line betweeen correct and incorrect very fine.
My ds almost 9, is one who will examine the rules and find the edge of it to be sure to the word that they are being followed exactly as the words say. Even when he knows that it means to color half the group, whole animal in the group, he would be the one to do what your son did. Hey its half the group right?

ABall,
Cute ! Well, they were all half colored.
When I was a teenager I asked my younger brother to put a toothpick in the cake that I was baking to see if it was done. He opened the oven door, put the toothpick in the cake and just left it in the cake !
In a homeschool book I read a woman had told her son to bake a cake by following the directions in the cookbook. The directions said to beat the cake batter by hand. He put his bare hand in the batter and beat it and said to his Mom "this is messy."

Aball,
I love the way your son thinks. Having been a math teacher for years, I enjoy it when kids can think in different ways mathematically. Had my dd or ds done that when they were in ps, the teachers would have marked it all incorrect (after which I would have been in there complaining...which happened a few times!). Can you guess one of the reasons we hs......

Your son is like my daughters. Very literal thinkers. I once said it is raining cats and dogs. My daughter ran to the window looking for the dogs and cats falling. God has made them all very special.

well the privious directions for another part of the page was to divide different shapes in half and then color them, I could see how he figured he should do the same with the groups of animils, but at the time it did make me laugh, and I did explain that they ment half of the group.

Too cute! You have to love the way kids' brains work.
