I am planning on doing my teaching rotation for our homeschool group this fall on the election process and government. Most stuff I've found on-line is for older (high school) students. I'll have about 12 kids, ranging from 5-11. We teach to about the third-grade level. Does anyone have any ideas, web sites, resources, etc. that might be helpful? Thanks!

but I do know that Weekly Reader publications has many books available now about Presidents and the election process. Their weekly newspapers also include a few articles about it. I bet there are a few good teacher resource books available at a teacher supply store.

Good luck!!

Jackie,

We get Weekly Reader and Scholastic News here. Both have election kits for the younger grades. Scholastic News is much less expensive. They both have on-line sites for teachers and students.

You could call your county election office. My two enjoy the sample ballots! Also call or visit your local parties. Most have lots available for the taking. We are doing field trips to each of ours this fall.

Good Luck!

I just ran across this lesson plan on: How Americans elect their president.
The website is:

www.smithsonianeducation.org/educators/lesson_plans/elections/cover.html

This brings you to an essay, lesson plans 1, 2, and 3 and resources. They say its for grades 4-8, but I'm sure the language could be modified to a 3rd grade level.
Each lesson plan is broken down to objectives, materials, subjects and procedure.

Also if you would like some more websites , field trips and lesson plans for all grades and subjects just go to :

www.smithsonianeducation.org/educators/index.html

That is the home page for educators and you just do a search for what you want.
Hope this helps,
Crystal in CA

Thanks everyone! I never thought of the election board. Perhaps I can get a Representative to come..... I'll be sure to check out that web site, Crystal.
