HI,
My husband and I homeschool my son here in Michigan. Our son just turned 7 this month. We knew for sure that teaching him at home was the answer shortly after he entered school. My son was not able to function in a classroom setting and his teachers agreed that he needed one-on-one education. We were blessed to find a homeschool program that is great for him. He is reading so much better now, he was struggling way more before the homeschool program Time4Learning, which has really helped him increase his vocabulary also . I agree with some of the post here, stressing over it doesn't help. We try to be patient. I'm glad to be here.

Hello and welcome! My name is Erica. I have 5 children and homeschool 4 of them. My oldest goes to High School. She was homeschooled from beginning through 8th. She's doing great in the public school. My 2nd oldest starts HS this coming year. We live in Illinois. My 4th is having trouble reading and that's how I found this group, just the other day. It's nice to meet you and hope to chat more!

Thank you very much for the welcome Erica. It's encouraging to hear from parents who have home schooled from K-HS, and even just starting. I was looking for additional reading help Learning to Read resources for my son as well. He's doing great with Time4Learning.com, and I have found so many wonderful resources and websites recommended here. I'm looking forward to being here often.

What I've been using is Sing Spell Read Write. It's worked for 4 of my 5 children. My one daughter is having trouble reading. She's almost 9 and she's reading at a 1st grade level. If she went to ps, she'd be labeled as ADD. The program is on the expensive side, but it more than paid for itself with having 5 children. I've been able to buy only workbooks for each child. I was thinking about getting a program for Emily called Ball-Stick-Bird Method to help her with reading, but after talking to the ladies here, I think I'll just keep having her read through the summer and not worry about it so much. My 2nd oldest would have been labeled as ADHD if she went to ps, but she's not having any problems now. She grew out of it, if that's possible. We do know that she was allergic to dye in food and mold and that's what made her hyper. She'll be attending High School this fall. Hopefully she won't have any problems. Have a good day and chat at you later! Erica

I did forget to tell you that my 2nd oldest daughter that was hyper, learned to read faster than all the other kids, but she doesn't like to read now and won't pick up a book if it doesn't look good by the cover. I made her read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe and she really did enjoy that. I'm going to work at getting her to read the whole series.

welcome to the both of you. I am also pretty new here. So far it has been great.
I am homeschooling my 11 yro son. We also live in illinois. My husband and I pulled our son out of ps in the 3rd grade. He was having a very hard time with reading, writting, and spelling. He was tested 2 times in ps system and they determed that he need no help from them. He wasn't in the lowest 5%. But had a visual perceptual deficiency. (Determend by them) To make a long story short, We decided to take over our sons education. And he has come a very long. I'm am sure we will speak again. Just want to say hi and introduce myself.

Thanks so much for the welcomes:) Erica, I have heard of that Emily Ball Stick Bird as well. I agree that just keeping the kids reading and not stressing over it, is probably the best thing. My son is doing a lot better with Time4Learning. Even being read to all the time is a great way for a child to learn and some learn faster that way; the more books they are read regularly. I've also noticed that he has intolerance to some dyes like red and blue, so we do everything to avoid them if we can. Was it any kind of mold that had her hyper, or only certain kinds of dyes?

Thanks AmyU and CrystalB9. Does your son like it much more, now that he is out of ps AmyU? I know that ps might constantly say that a child doesn't need help, when they actually do need it. My mother-in-law had a constant battle with the ps system when my husband was a child.

I love your quote CrystalB9. It's very uplifting, and oh so true!
