Hi, my name is Beth and I am currently living in Ithaca, New York with my dh and 13 yr. old son. We will be moving this summer and I was hoping to get some input. Because of my dh's career choice (Active duty Air Force), we are not sure (yet) where we will be going. The highest chance will be Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas, and Langley AFB in Virginia. Just wondering if anyone is homeschooling in either areas, and if so, I would love to hear how it is there. We spent four yrs. in San Anotonio a loooong  time ago, but that was before our son was a thought. We know the area well, just wanted to know how it will be for a son who is reallllly not happy about moving  and will need some support. As for Langley, it is our "wanted" base, but the chances are slim for that..... Any input on either area for the homeschooling aspect would be deeply appreciated. We will be notified in the middle of May where our next and last destination in this crazy job will be, but I really need to get my head straight on what we are in for...... Oh, and if you believe in them, we could do with some prayers on helping us make the decision we need to make. If it is looking too bad (San Antonio base), we may opt for my son and I to stay in this area (there is family here), my dh will "serve his time", and will come back "for good" when he retires in two yrs. Thanks so much, I could use any and all input, both good and bad.....

Welcome Beth! Glad you found our little forum. You've got some big decisions and changes ahead I see. Good luck with that. I can't help you when it comes to homeschooling in various states. I was born and raised in GA and still reside here with my kids.
BTW, I'm Missy and I homeschool my 9yo dd and 5yo ds!

Hi, Beth! I'm Jackie, homeschooling three in Central Ohio. My "little" brother is in San Antonio! We have quite a few Texans on this board. Tina was just commenting about going to San Antonio for a conference there! My understanding is that New York is pretty strict with HS'ers, while Texas is really laid back. So if you end up there, it will be a pleasant change for you!

Hi, yup, it was a shock when we arrived here and was not given an option, but to homeschool. The regs. were very overwhelming in the beginning, but after four yrs. it is just a normal part of our lives. I was looking at the regs. from Texas and just giggled the whole way through!!!!:) I am still confused on the Virginia regs., so either will hope to get a reply, or do some further digging. This is still "up in the air" at the moment anyways, considering that my dh is thinking of doing a short tour for a yr. rather than get sent to San Antonio. No offense toward anyone there, it just was not for us, we have fallen back in love with the amazing country here. Thanks for the input so far, it is greatly appreciated!!!!!

As I said, my brother lives there, so I have visited. BUT...there's NO WAY I'd want to actually LIVE there, so no offense! I love the "decidious forests" (guess what we studied in science this year, lol!) of the eastern coast!

Yup, we "did" four yrs. our first time around, and we hope not to finish out his career going in full circle!!:) It is frustrating here in the middle of the winter, but now, wow, it is beyond beautiful!!!! My son has just dug in his heels on this issue, he hates the heat (actually get's sick in it), and does not want to go where we will have a "cactus for a Christmas tree". His words!! lol. I guess this would have been easier if he was just a little one, but this is a hard age, and we have had a really rough 4 yrs. I cannot expect my dh to give up his career choice with such a short time left, yet I'm trying to make the right decision for my son also..... I'm praying and getting much strength from my family, I know it will work out. This is when I am thankful that I am homeschooling because it does help give us more options in that bracket of things!!! Thanks so much!!

welcome Beth my name is Kris and I am from south Texas I have been homeschooling my two dd's for 5 years now. Texas is really laid back and you are really on your own for homeschooling there's not alot to do. No testing, no nothing. It's wonderful state to homeschool in. Yes, I have to agree with your ds it does get very hot and humid down here. The heat you can take it's the humidty that is hard. We have been here for year and I will tell you the true. It's hard to get use too. I love the homeschool rules buts that's about it. I guess if you were born and raised in the state it's wonderful. We just can't get use to the heat. ALL the time.
