Our son is currently in K at the ps. We love his teacher but are very disturbed by the attitudes he's picked up, the things he has been taught in music and art class and he is saying words that he NEVER heard from our circle of influence. He also is a strong follower and as a result he has had alot of trouble with being bullied and as a result has started to become agressive.
I am pretty certain we will be using FIAR and supplementing with Saxon math. My dh and I both had Saxon in school (we both graduated from church school) and really liked their approach to learning.
I am excited to glean lots of wisdom from you all!!

I was wondering the exact same thing. However, I can just imagine. I called my 9yo in the room one day to watch a show about a very famous artist. All the sudden it got really graphic in language and pictures. I got lucky because she wasn't too interested and didn't really pay much attention to it.

One fantastic way to introduce classical music are two CD's. The first one is called "Beethoven's Wig", and the other is "Beethoven's Wig II". It takes classical pieces and puts words to them. The title is Beethoven's Fifth, with the words:
Beethoven's Wig!
It's really big!
Beethoven's wig is big and curly and it's white!
Beethoven takes his wig off when he sleeps at night.
Because it's big!
It's really big!
Beethoven's wig...is...BIG!!!!
The CD's go through the songs twice. The first time has all the words, and then they are played with just music. My children will hear a classical piece somewhere, and will tell you that "That's Tchaikovsky's CannonBall!" (or his 1812 Overture, to us normal folk!) Just recently, Faythe was struggling with a piano piece. I'm listening to it, and think, "Is that what I THINK it is?" So I asked her the name of it. "Trumpet Tune!" I then informed her that she KNEW that song. I played it through for her, and sang,
"First came William, then a second William
Henry Stephen, then a second Hank....
Altogether, kings and queens of E......ngland!"
Her eyes lit up, and her playing improved 100%!!! It thrills her that SHE can play "Classical" music!
One of my favorites is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by Mozart. It's a conversation between Mozart and his wife. He wants to play his violin at night, and she's having fits:
"The music sounds like Heaven!"
"But it's half-past eleven!"
"The notes are stars that twinkle!"
"I envy Rip Van Winkle!"

Hi Julie!
Welcome! I'm in my first year of homeschooling and we are currently using FIAR with my 5yo. I think you will love it, we do! This is a great spot, you'll find lots of wisdom here. Be sure and check out FIAR's message boards if you haven't already, they are good for more specific FIAR questions. Enjoy! :D

We do not have TV or video so I know he did not pick up the dance he was doing from anything here at home. Anyways, he was gyrating around and kept motioning to a certain part of his body.  I then asked him where he had learned such a thing and he told me "music class". He has also started using words that we don't use here in the home and none of our friends we are around use them either.

Hi, Julie! I'm going to start homeschooling my 4.5 year old daughter next year and we are planning on doing FIAR and Saxon Math, too.
I had forgotten about the Beethoven's Wig CDs, Jackie. LOL! I'm gonna have to look for those. :)
