Hey I'm trying to decide if I should take a few things to Staples to get comb bound or if I should just buy a comb binding machine.

How much does Staples charge to bind something?

FWIW, I bought one - the smaller one that only does, I think, 85 pp or less. It was fine for the first year. Now I end up binding many of the books we print in three volumes. Originally, I just didn't think I'd print that many books with that many pages, but I was wrong.

I'm looking at one that does up to 300 pages for just under 100 on some online store..(forget what the site was now.. but google is my friend and I can find it again :) )

Our Staples charges 3.50 to bind something that's more than 50 pages but less than 250 pages and then it's .50 for a clear cover and rigid backing.

Ok.. so I just found a binding machine on Ebay for 60 that does up to 250 pages... so for the cost of getting 15 things bound I can have my own machine and not have to travel to the next town over to get things done... hmmmmm should I or shouldn't I?

If I thought I would do that much comb binding, I'd do it! I've considered it before. Mostly when I need to make a book out of something, I 3-hole punch it for a ring binder OR one of those report covers from ACCO where you have the metal thingy that holds the pages and covers together and accommodates a couple or three inches of pages.

I'd buy one, just for the convenience of it! I'd hate to have something I want to bind and have to travel a town over to get it done. I'm also one of those people who prepare things late at night, so I'd be annoyed at having to wait till morning to go get the binding done.

yeah I'm buying it... ugggg hubby will for sure shoot me some day. He said "Well honey you can sell it when you are done with it I guess." So I guess that means I can buy it ;)

I got an inexpensive one from Staples on their "damaged table" and use it all the time. It wasn't damaged - just the box was :)

I have never thought of using that kind of machine, I just cut the binding off and hole punch it.

I recommend just buying one. This is the one (http://www.mybinding.com/.sc/ms/dd/ee/1901/GBC-CombBind-C75-Plastic-Comb-Binding-Machine)I just purchased. It was actually cheaper than any I saw on eBay. In addition, I was able to find an online coupon code for Mybinding.com.

I would probably bye one since you will no doubt use it for a lot of years! Then you can also use it for selling things you create yourself!

I have a bind-it-all that I really like. It's for wire binding. I have a comb binder too, but it's been stuck in storage for the past four years. I have the punch and the combs, but not the binder which stinks. I'd love to be able to use it again.

These things are so cheap now, I say go for it! I'll have to keep an eye out for them when I'm back in the states this summer.

very nice ! looks like the handle will make things easy to do too! When you get it pay close attention to getting your points on the right side, otherwise it pops up and flies at yoU! Lol! we had fun when I did that on accident!

Andrea, where did you find a coupon. I like the one that you bought.

I just googled "coupon codes for My Binding" and one came up. This was a while ago though. I looked just now and couldn't find any useful ones.

It should be here this evening... we are close to the UPS warehouse.. and are in the last stops of the day.. sometimes they dont' make it here till 6 or 7 at night :( I can't wait, I have piles of things laid out on my bar to bind :-P

KrisRV

way to go Sommer, now I am going to sent my stuff to you to be bind.. ok.

crazymama
03-05-2010, 07:09 PM
Sure Kris.. send it.. I had fun playing.

Ok... honest review.. after the kinks at first and an online search to try to figure out how it works (the directions STINK), I'm happy I bought it... it took me just a few minutes to get 3 100 or so page books bound.

The kinks??? Well first it wouldn't punch the paper... I pulled and pulled on the handle and finally heard a snap (oh the handle has to be set "back" not sure how else to describe this and I wish there were batteries in my camera to take a pic to explain it, but my bat. charger died :( ), after the snap it started punching just half the page.. I picked up the machine messed with the handle, shook it and who knows what else, but it finally started punching... well then I notice that somewhere in all of this, the binding teeth have "frozen up" on the top. Hubby and I messed with it, finally pushed the "3rd level" of them up towards the tall prongs with a butter knife and it unfroze it.

How did I live without one of these for so long?

TeacherMom

YOu sound like me when I learned how to bind on our churches binder. the handle has to go back one way you insert the paper then set the length of paper, and snap the paper, then you set the binding up and pull and snap it connects and you slide it off of the stinking up things... is that pretty much it ?
?

SO you like it? I got my pink one yesterday and I wanted to know what you thought of your since I think we ended up with the same one. I love mine! I already bound everything I had in my dinning room and I have a stack of things to bind downstairs. Did they send you more than 49 combs??

crazymama
03-05-2010, 09:52 PM
I didn't count, but I think there is more than 49 there.. sadly most are very small, but that's ok there are some small projects up my sleeves ;) Mommy made handwriting books sound mighty fun.. oh and all the History Scribe/Happy Scribe and other books I have downloaded and are just sitting here in my computer waiting to be made into books ;)

Tmom.. yeah it sounds like the work the same way.

I'm still scratching my head as to what was going on with it at first... I was pretty sure it was broken, maybe something was just jammed up inside it?

Minthia

Most of my combs were the super small ones as well...I figure we can use those for fun small books and such. I did get 1 that was so big it doesn't even work with the machine...I am thinking it must hold 500 pages or something. Not a problem though...my kids used it as a sword. :)

crazymama
03-06-2010, 06:33 AM
lol.. at least I'm not the only one who's kids found them to be great toys! Reagan used them for rockets.. sadly one had a water landing and I have to go deep sea diving in the turtle tank to retrieve it!

I got one or two that are HUGE too... I'm sure I might be able to get creative enough to do something with them ;)
