Just curious. Who all is covering ancient history this coming year? And if you care to share what curriculum/a you'll be using, please do!

We'll be picking back up in September, probably. We're using MOH via WP, and soon will be incorporating an LA program from the publisher of MOH as a Beta tester. :D I'm excited!

We've already covered pre-history up through Mesopotamia and such. We've done quite a bit on Egypt, but it's where we'll pick up. WP covers MOH by civilization, so it's not in the same order as the TOC.

We're also covering Biblical history, so we're going a bit slow. We've covered Abraham and his family, and the next thing we'll cover is Israel in slavery and the Exodus.

Anyone else?

We are doing Ancient Hist this year - we are going to cover from Meso era to early Renaissance (if we make it!). We did this about 2 years ago, but just with ds for 5th grade. Now he is stepping it up for 7th grade, and his sisters are doing it at the elementary age. I will be doing ancient hist for grades 2-7 . . .this is the FIRST time I have had all three on a similar theme! (I managed to do much (but not all) of science that way too!)

We are using mostly literature to study history, but ds also reads the world book cd to timeline/facts, and I also got SOTW for the girls (and my ds is he wants to listen - he can work on his maps or timelines while he listens if he likes) as filler and for the activity books. Then I also got some workbooks for extra coverage, like History Mysteries (I think it is called) and History pockets -- a lot is modeled off of what Veritas Press uses.

I already have most of the lesson plans for my ds drawn up, and am working in the girls' now. We are excited about working together next year, and I am excited as it means a bit less work for me! I hope!

We have never done anything BUT ancient, well some middle ages and slight touch on explorers and renaissance! But seriously LOL...I think I have the only 11 year old kid who never learned about Pilgrims!

This coming year we are doing ancient Japan, China, and India. Only half a year though, and then...dun da da duh...American history! WOOOHOOO!

I made up all my own history stuff - hence all the books for sale. And...I had already sold about 20 other ancient greece and rome books before I listed here. Maybe I over did it on the books?

We did one or two periods each year - so it was pretty in depth and took forever to get to Christopher Columbus.

I think easten ancient history will be very cool. I never learned any of that stuff when I was a kid. We are using the History Channel Multi-Media Classroom series. Very cool program.

Funny thing is my kids have learned ancient China and that area via video games, Ancient Civilizations game is a battle game but you learn about different dynasties and we have watched videos that mention a dynasty and ds10 will give me a detail on who that persons is and what the dynasty did etc.. I never knew his games were so educational I thought it was al about setting up the battle teams, but he said there are history notes in the game and you have to read them , lol I love it!

we have been doing unit studies, currently on Egypt. But I am seriously considering doing MOH - I just keep comming back to it. I like the idea of an overview of the whole thing - bible & secular, all of history....
But then I love the flexibility of unit stuides, and doing what interests us too.
We don't have to cover all of history in terms of state requirements. I just can't decide!!

I gave up trying to find a history curriculum that fits us but I am using a free timeline I found on Currclick and using that as a base together with lots of books from the library etc, both fact books and biographies and history based comics.

When I think about it, I learnt most of my Roman history from the Asterix comic books, though you have to look it up to get a lot of the jokes.

Were doing MOH and SOTW together this year for the ancients. MOH for the biblical end of it, and SOTW for the secular part. Really I am counting MOH as part of my bible class. We are doing a time line combining the two to make a complete picture of the times (both biblical history and secular history).

I found a website that tells how to combine the two. http://www.redshift.com/~bonajo/sotwmoh.htm

I am sure its not going to be easy but I wanted to cover both and make a complete story of history.

Wow, thanks, I will have to check into getting Notgrass for when my YS is older. Right now I have a ds going into 4th grade and a ds that is mentally retarded so I think Notgrass is a little above their level.

My soon to be 4th grader could use it when he gets a little older though. I am sure I will eventually use it. Thanks for the info though, I have been looking for an American History curriculum that is bible based for when we get through all of the SOTW's in 4 years.

We are STILL doing SOTW, Vol 1- and have been for the past 18 months !!!!!

There are so many books to can read to supplement the chapter study, and so many activities you can do (plus we add extra)..

I would like to think that by new school year in Feb, we are ready to start Vol 2 !!!

We spent a few months on Egypt, and lots of time on ancient China + India.
Just starting the Greeks - and Im sure this will take us a few months too !

I just found something that might intrest everyone. I found this on another message board and I am really excited about using this along with SOTW and MOH. Its a book called Art in Story: Teaching Art History to Elementary School Children Second Edition

It teaches art history from prehistoric art to modern day computer art. I am going to go through it chapter by chapter along side ancient history and add the art/artists to the time line.

Heres a link to the book if anyone is intrested.
