Do you ever turn school off?
I don't seem to know how to turn my teachermom off in my brain and so even encouraging things about writing something is considered school, if you are talking about writing a sermon or anything you are talking about school to me too... anyone else like me?
How do you turn it off? I can't seem to find the switch

I think that homeschooling becomes such a lifestyle that it is hard to turn it off. I have a hard time turning it off but once off I have a harder time turning it back on! LOL. So maybe it is better I keep it turned to on. lol.

LOL...I'm kinda that way, too. I probably drive people nuts with how I turn everything into a learning opportunity!
I don't know if we can turn it off!

I don't think we come with that switch. I've even found myself correcting others in my mind. Eeek!
We received several of those Christmas letters with our greeting cards and I took out the ol' red pen and marked the errors. How sad is that?

I haven't found my switch yet!
Homeschooling is a big part of our lives. We have become accustomed to learning new things throughout the day.

Oh MamaBear....I am always correcting people in my head also! I even correct signs I see. In fact, one that really grinded my gear was "Re-Grand Opening" UGH! I couldn't stop talking about it as I passed by! What does it mean to grand again anyway??? No one grands again!!!! Therefore you cannot regrand. You reopen!!!!
Oh and Toddler's School. A sign said Toddler's School on one said and Toddlers' School on the other!
See I beat ya'll in the nutz department.

I can't find that switch either. When I was in college for teaching I was always on the look out for "stuff", then subbing I was always on the look out (and if there were extra copies I took them home) & as a teacher always on the look out & have tons of copies of stuff & now that I'm doing stuff at home still looking for "stuff"!! Luckily hubby has pretty much scanned all my copies I had. Now I just have a few papers!!! Plus it's easily accessible!!!
I find myself doing this more and more. I've been correcting myself and DH a lot, I figure if we're going to homeschool then we need to be doing everything correctly!
I HATE typos in books, signs, etc.

I don't ever really turn it off. It has become part of me. It is the way we live.
I constantly correct people in my mind. One of my very biggest pet peeves is misuse of the English language. Now I know I screw up a lot of things but come on some stuff is just stupid.
For instance....
I hate when people say ax instead of ask - so you want to chop up a question?
pacifically instead of specifically - as opposed to atlantically?
irregardless instead of regardless - that just isn't even a word
My husband's step sister says Levi Stratus instead of Levi Straus and I just want to smack her because there is no such company
And what about new and improved? It can't be both! Either it is new or it is improved but not both!

irregardless
Main Entry:
ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation:
\ˌir-i-ˈgärd-ləs\
Function:
adverb
Etymology:
probably blend of irrespective and regardless
Date:
circa 1912
nonstandard : regardless
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead. Merriam-Webster Dictionary
And as far as "new and improved" goes, there are times when it is absolutely correct. When the new Pampered Chef catalogs come out twice a year, it contains products that are both new and improved. They lump those products together. Say, 20 are improved and 40 are new, they'll say "presenting 60 new and improved products".

I've always corrected people in my head (and sometimes out loud). I mean ALWAYS, even when I was a kid in school. I get frustrated reading something with a lot of typos or watching the news when the anchors & reporters sound like idiots & can't get a sentence right. I correct my kids, my hubby, and myself. I used to correct my teachers, when I was in school. Sometimes, I'd even correct their corrections. I'd look over a paper that they had checked & given back to me. Then I'd go up to their desk & tell them why I was right (where they said I was wrong), and sometimes even point out mistakes they had missed! A lot of my teachers didn't like me, I can't imagine why.
I also can't seem to stop turning things into learning experiences. I know some peole get irritated with it, but it's just the way I am. I was like that even before we started homeschooling, from the time dd was a baby (probably why dd was so far ahead when she started K in a public school). I think some of us are just like naturally. I wouldn't want to shut it off. I think I'd lose too much of myself if I did.

Thanks for the lesson Amie!!! I like how you used Pampered Chef as an example. Perhaps it is because I love Pampered Chef!

okay I was mostly meaning with our kids, and all because I heard dh say dd could write a sermon on something and I interjected "oh she doesn't even like to write the assignments I give her to do!..." which bothered him as he was trying to be encouraging to her about using her talents and I became MRS TEACHERMOM ruining the whole situation.

okay to correct that first I would kill the t , lol My step dad stopped us from saying it Acrost because its not even acrossed, so many people use that when they speak too! I am not the worlds best typer and my spelling has been challenging at times but some things are by dialect changed too.

New and improved still makes no sense to me. If something is improved it is a better than a product that is already out there. If it is new then it is just new. For instance an add for an upgraded version of some sort of software might be advertised as the New Version 6.0 or the Improved Version 5.0, it wouldn't be the new version 5.0 if 5.0 was already on the market.
Sorry for the thread jack there:D. Just bothers me.

Like I said, when The Pampered Chef uses the phrase, they are referring to two different types of products: some are new, and some are improved. But when we get our seasonal mini-catalogs that only talk about new and improved products, they lump the two together.

I agree with both things you've said. Some products do have the new and improved on it, doesn't make sense. It makes me think, "if their product is new, yet it's already improved, why should I buy it now? There will only be an 'improvement' again soon" or "why should I trust a product that is improved the second it comes out?"
Homeschooling is a way of life for me, it's totally a lifestyle! Probably more so since I was homeschooled myself. School is part of life and there aren't lines between the two for me.

I always try and say pacificly. Don't ask me why. I don't know! I am aware of it and usually stop and think before I go and actually say it. My kids tease me really bad about it because I am a stickler on grammar.
Maybe its because I live near the pacific ocean????

I have been really working on fractions with Emily lately. She is getting better at them and I look for ways to make fractions real to her. Yesterday she was eating a small pizza that was cut into eight slices. I would ask her to make a fraction telling me how many she had eaten or how many were left. Katie walked in and saw what we were doing and said, "Emily doesn't Mama ever give you a break from math?" I love it.

I also don't think it's possible not to be that way! There are too many great "educational" opportunities NOT to! ;) I think the pizza thing for fractions was a wonderful hands-on idea that would make more sense to the child than looking at some picture in a book! I do that kind of thing a lot! After 10 years of homeschooling my kids are used to it! :)
I see the frustration though, TMom with what happened with you guys! I've done that kind of thing too! I'd go to her and say, "daddy's right, you'd do great writing a sermon! He'd LOVE to see what you come up with!" Or something like that!
You're human, you're allowed to make little mistakes now and then! ;)

I find myself using so many different cirucimstances as teachable moments. I mean I don't turn it into a huge lesson but I always find myself taking my time to point things out and explain. I really didn't do that before I hs'ed.
